SOVEREIGNTY IN ITS OWN SPHERE Address at the Inauguration of the Free University, delivered October 20, 1880, in the Choir of the Nieuwe Kerk at Amsterdam, by Dr. A. Kuyper. Your Excellency, Minister of the King. Honorable Burgomaster, Aldermen, and Secretary of this city. Learned Rector Magnificus and Secretary of the Municipal University. Right Honorable Members of the States-General. Esteemed gentlemen and brothers, who govern this School as Directors and Curators, or who as Founders, Members, and district or ward leaders helped in its building. Learned Professors of Amsterdam's two universities. Most learned Doctors of the various sciences. Reverend and learned Ministers of the Word of God. Honored board members of the associations whose aim coincides with ours: to turn back the de-Christianizing of the nation. Noble student gentlemen of various universities. Esteemed gentlemen of the weekly and daily press, organs of public opinion. And further, all of you who — of whatever name or station — have come here to honor this ceremony with your presence. Most respected listeners! Most welcome lady listeners! Those in whose hands rests authority over this Foundation have charged me with a task of honor: to dedicate their school of higher learning by introducing it into the arena of public life, before government and people. I pray you, grant me generously as I do so the silent benefit of a well-disposed ear and an indulgent judgment. The seriousness of that plea will speak for itself, if you consider what awaits me here. It is not the delivery of an inaugural professorial address, nor the reading of a rectoral treatise. No — cut off from the quieter refuges of scholarly research, I am driven by the very nature of my task onto the slippery ground of public life, where nettles burn on every hedge and thorns wound you at every step. For it cannot be hidden, and none of us wishes to gloss it over: it was not love of abstract learning that drove us on, like so many Maecenases, to this work. What impelled us to this daring, perhaps even reckless, endeavor was the deeply imprinted conviction of duty — that what we did, had to be done, for Christ's sake; for the name of the Lord; in the higher and holier interest of our people and our country. Our appearance here is thus anything but innocent. And we are deeply convinced that the interest which ran ahead of this Foundation in every way, through good report and ill, before it ever appeared — and which may now attend it at its opening — has nothing to do with our persons. It sprang solely from the impression the public received: that the Netherlands was watching an event whose track might well leave its mark on the nation's future. After all, if we could have accepted the existing state of affairs when tested against a higher touchstone, why would we have undertaken this work at all? In our undertaking, then, however gently voiced, lies a certain protest against what surrounds us, with the implied claim that something better can be found. And that thought alone makes us diffident, makes us shy — if only for the appearance of presumption that glides behind it like a shadow. This could give offense; this could wound. So let me hasten to assure you: whether we look at the power of learning and influence and gold arrayed against us, or reflect with shame upon our own smallness and impotence, it is not high conceit but simply quiet humility that speaks in the assurance of our words. We would rather have stayed in hiding. To watch others take the lead would have been so much more restful. But since that could not be; since we had to act; we stepped forward — far from indifferent to men's aversion or affection, yet steering our course solely by what, in our judgment, was demanded by the honor of our God. You now expect me to tell you what this School we are launching has come to do in the garden of the Netherlands; why it waves the cap of liberty on its spear; and why it gazes so intently at the book of the Reformed religion. Let me link the answers to those three questions together with one single idea — "sovereignty in its own sphere" — by pointing you to that sovereignty in its own sphere as the stamp our Foundation bears: in its national significance, in its scholarly aim, and in its Reformed character. I. To present our Foundation to you in its national significance is, then, the first part of my address. — The life of our nation too, gentlemen, is wrestling through a crisis in this tremendous century; a crisis it shares with every nation that counts; a crisis running through the whole world of thinking humanity. Now every crisis concerns a stricken life, to which the course of the disease promises either a renewal of youth or destruction in death. So I ask: what is the "stricken life" here? What is the stake in this crisis, for our nation too? And who would still repeat the answers of former days — as if the battle were about progress or preservation; about narrowness or breadth; about the ideal or the real; or about rich and poor? The inadequacy, the disproportion, the shallowness of every one of those diagnoses has come into light too clear for that. "Clerical" and "liberal" then became the watchwords, as if the question were the abuse or the purifying of spiritual influence. Until that screen too was contemptuously knocked over, and from the center outward, in ever-widening circles, the realization broke through — grasped at first only by the higher Seers of our century — that in the present crisis of the nations we are dealing with no mere shade of difference, no interest, no legal claim, but with a living person; with Him who once swore that He was a King, and who, for that sovereign royal claim, gave His life on a cross at Golgotha. "The Nazarene, our holy inspirer; inspiring ideal; ideal genius of piety!" — so people long cried in the most generous tones. But history rejected that praise as contradicting the Nazarene's own claim. Nothing less than to be Messiah, the Anointed, and therefore Sovereign of all kings, possessing "all power in heaven and on earth" — that was the declaration of his calm, and therefore glass-clear, divine-human consciousness. Not a hero of faith; not a "martyr of honor"; but Melek, Rex, Basileus tōn Ioudaiōn — King of the Jews, that is, Bearer of Sovereignty — stood as the criminal presumption for which he had to die, written on the placard of shame upon the post of the cross. And over that sovereignty — over the existence or non-existence of that power in the One born of Mary — the minds that think, the powers that rule, and the nations that live along with them are in as violent a ferment now as in the first three centuries. That King of the Jews: either the saving truth to which every people answers Amen, or... the fundamental lie which every people ought to fight — there stands the question of sovereignty which, once posed in the blood of the Nazarene, has now once again torn a rift through the world of our whole spiritual, our whole human, our whole national existence. What is sovereignty? Will you not go along with me if I define it as: the authority that has the right, the duty, and the power to break and to avenge every resistance to its will? And does not the ineradicable conviction of every people speak in you as well — that original, absolute sovereignty can rest in no creature, but must coincide with the Majesty of God? Your soul too must proclaim the Triune God as the only absolute Sovereign, if you believe in Him at all as the Deviser and Creator, the Ordainer and Destiner of all things. Provided — and here I lay the emphasis — provided one acknowledges alongside this that the high Sovereign transferred, and still transfers, his authority to human persons; so that on earth, in the visible order, you never run up against God himself directly, but always see sovereign authority come before you in an office held by men. And here, at this placing of God's sovereignty in a human office, the supremely important question arises: how does that transfer proceed? Is God's all-embracing sovereignty transferred, undivided, to one single man? Or does the one called sovereign on earth possess the power to compel obedience only within a limited sphere — a sphere bounded by other spheres, in which another, and not he, is sovereign? The answer to that question differs according to whether you stand inside the sphere of Revelation or outside it. "As undivided as possible — but then also penetrating every sphere!" So, from of old, ran the answer among those in whose world of thought there was no room for a special revelation. "As far as possible" — for God's sovereignty over the things above lies beyond man's reach; over nature, beyond man's power; over fate, beyond man's disposal. But for all the rest — then yes: no "sovereignty in its own sphere"; the power of the State commanding without limit, disposing of persons, of their lives, their rights, their consciences, even their faith. It was the age of many gods, and therefore, by the rule vis unita fortior — united force is stronger — the one unlimited State stood more imposing, more majestic, than the divided power of the gods. And by that very fact the State, embodied in the Caesar, at last became God itself. The god-"State" that could tolerate no other "states" beside it. Hence the passion for world dominion. Divus Augustus! — with Caesarism for its cult. A deeply sinful idea, dissected for the thinking mind only eighteen centuries later, in Hegel's system of the State as "the present God." Over against this: "Not as far as possible, but in the absolute sense — undivided and unbroken — is that sovereignty transferred!" So Jehovah had it proclaimed in Israel through the interpreters of Messianic prophecy. And that man-Messiah appeared: with power in heaven; with power over nature; with the claim of power over every people; and power, within every people, over the conscience too, over faith itself — even the mother's bond to her child had to yield where He demanded obedience. Here, then, is absolute sovereignty, extending over all things visible and invisible, over what is spiritual and what is material alike — laid in the hands of a man. Not one of the kingdoms, but the absolute Kingdom. "For this I was born, and for this I came into the world: to be King." "All power in heaven and on all the earth is mine." "One day every enemy shall be made subject to me, and every knee shall bow before me!" There stands the sovereignty of the Messiah — which the prophet once foretold; which the Nazarene claimed; which he began to demonstrate by his miracles; which his apostles described; and which the church of that Christ, on their authority, confesses: undivided, and yet transferred — or rather, taken up in order one day to be given back. For only in this way shall that perfect harmony one day break through: the sovereignty passes from Messiah back to God himself, who shall then be ta panta en pasi — "all in all." But — and behold here the glorious idea of Freedom! — in that absolute sovereignty of the sinless Messiah lies, at the same time, the direct denial and contesting of every absolute sovereignty on earth vested in sinful man; and this through the division of life into distinct spheres, each with sovereignty of its own. Our human life — its material foreground visible, its spiritual background invisible — proves to be neither simple nor uniform, but an infinitely complex organism. So composite is it that the individual exists only in groups, and only in those groups can the whole reveal itself. Call the parts of this one great machine cogwheels, each driven by its own spring upon its own axle; or call them spheres, each filled with its own tensed spirit of life — the name or image is indifferent — so long as you grant that there are in life circles of every kind, as countless as the constellations in the sky, each with its circumference drawn at a fixed radius from its own principle as center: the apostolic hekastos en tō idiō tagmati — "each in his own order." Just as we speak of a "moral world," a "world of learning," a "world of commerce," a "world of art," so we speak more precisely still of a "sphere" of moral life, a "sphere" of domestic life, a "sphere" of social life — each with its own domain; and because each has its own domain, each with its own Sovereign within the bounds of that domain. So there is a domain of nature, where the Sovereign works upon matter, by force, according to fixed law. But there is also a domain of personal life, of domestic life, of scholarly life, of social life, of church life — each obeying its own law of life, each standing under its own supreme authority. A domain of thought, where no law but that of logic may rule. A domain of conscience, where none may give sovereign command but the Holy One himself. A domain, finally, of faith, within whose bounds only the person himself is sovereign — the person who, in the depths of his being, consecrates himself through that faith. Now all these spheres mesh with one another, gear-tooth into gear-tooth, and precisely in that working-upon and sliding-into each other arises the rich, many-sided, many-formed life of humanity. But there arises in that life also the danger that one sphere may bend in the one beside it; make a wheel jolt; wrench tooth after tooth out of true; and so disturb the running of the whole. And here is the reason for the appearance, in the authority of the State, of one distinct sovereign sphere more: a sphere which, for the life of all these many spheres so far as they emerge into the visible, must make sound interaction possible and keep each within the bounds of justice; and which likewise — since personal life can be crushed by the group in which one lives — must shield the individual against the tyranny of his own circle. A Sovereign who, as Scripture puts it with such pith, "by justice keeps the land standing" — for without justice it destroys itself and falls. High above all these spheres, then, towers the sovereignty of the State: the power that protects the individual and fixes the mutual boundaries in law between the visible spheres of life, with the right to command and the right to compel. But inside each of those spheres it has no standing. There another authority rules — an authority that descends from God apart from the State, which the State does not confer but recognizes. And even in fixing the legal relations between these spheres, the sovereign State may not take its own will or preference as its measure, but is bound to the choice of a Higher will, as that will speaks from the nature and purpose of each sphere. As the wheels were designed to run, so must the State let them run. Not to pinch life, not to bind freedom, but to make free movement of life possible for and within each of these spheres — is that not, for every nobler sovereign of a State, the ideal that beckons him? Sharply, then, the two creeds stand opposed. Whoever lives out of the sphere of Revelation — and lives in it consistently — confesses as a matter of course that all sovereignty rests in God and therefore can flow only from Him; that this sovereignty of God is laid, absolutely and undivided, upon the man-Messiah; and that under this Son of Man, anointed Sovereign, human freedom is safe precisely because, alongside the State, every other domain of life also knows an eminence derived from Him — that is, possesses sovereignty in its own sphere. Those, on the other hand, who perceive no such special sphere of revelation, and therefore deny it, insist that the question of sovereignty be separated absolutely from the question of faith. They maintain, accordingly, that no sovereignty is conceivable but that of the State; they strive to have the high idea of sovereignty embodied ever more purely in the almighty State; and they can, consistently, grant the other spheres of life no more generous a freedom than whatever right the State leaves them out of weakness, or grants them by its warrant. Creeds concerning sovereignty I called these declarations — convictions of life, not systems. For the chasm that divides them lies not in a different arrangement of thoughts, but in the acknowledging or denying of facts of life. For us, who live out of Revelation, that Messiah lives, that Christ works — and he sits as Sovereign on the throne of God's power far more really than you sit there on the stones of this choir-tomb. While conversely, whoever does not confess this must fight it — as an obstructive self-deception standing in the way of the people's development; a pernicious dogma; a fantasy without meaning! Two confessions, then, colliding head-on. Time and again, unmanly half-heartedness has shoved them behind a broad row of hybrid systems, blended of more of the one and less of the other, or of equal parts of each. But as the principial creeds from which even these gray blends borrowed their base tint, they have always, whenever the times grew serious, broken in wrath through this unprincipled game, to offer battle once more with open visor, and to demand it — as the only two giant antitheses that split life at the root, and are therefore worth staking one's own life on, though it stir the lives of others. "Sovereignty in its own sphere" defending itself against the sovereignty of the State — there you have the short course of world history, even before the Messianic sovereignty had been proclaimed. For the royal Child of Bethlehem covers that "sovereignty in its own sphere" with his shield, but he did not create it. It existed of old. It lay in the order of creation, in the plan of human life; it was there before State sovereignty arose. But once State sovereignty had arisen, it suspected in this native sovereignty of the life-spheres its perpetual foe; while within those spheres themselves, the violation of their own law of life — that is, sin — weakened their power of resistance. And so the history of antiquity, among every people, offers us the shameful spectacle of the freedom of each sphere dying out after persistent, sometimes heroic struggle, while the power of the State, passing over into Caesarism, gains the field. Socrates drinking the cup of poison; Brutus driving the dagger into Caesar's heart; the Galileans whose blood Pilate mingled with their sacrifices — these are the wild, heroic convulsions of a free, organic life that at last crashes down under the iron hand of that Caesarism. As antiquity hastens to its end, there is no freedom left; there are no peoples; there are no spheres anymore. All had become one sphere, one world-empire, under one sovereign will of State. And only in the intoxication of an unmanning luxury did humanity, sunk in disgrace, drink the sting of that disgrace out of its heart. He who then, by a power from beyond this earth — by the power of faith — created anew, within that iron band, a free sphere of his own, and in that sphere a free sovereignty, was Jesus the Nazarene. With God in his heart, one with God, himself God, he withstood the Caesar; broke the iron doors; and established the sovereignty of faith as the deepest axle on which all sovereignty in its own sphere turns. That in his "It is finished" there lay hidden — besides the salvation of the elect — also a sōtēria tou kosmou, a liberation of the world, a world of liberties: this neither Pharisee nor disciple grasped. But Jesus saw through it. Hence the Basileus — the "King" — on his cross. As Sovereign he came forward. With the intruding "Prince of this world" he fought for supremacy over that world, as its rightful Sovereign. And scarcely do his followers form a sphere of their own, when behold — they too collide with the sovereignty of the State. They go under. Their blood flows. But the sovereign principle of faith of Jesus cannot be blotted out even with their blood. Deus Christus or Divus Augustus! becomes the shibboleth that decides the world's fate. And the Christ wins, and Caesar topples, and the liberated nations step forward again, each with its own kings; and within the realms of those kings, with spheres of their own; and in those spheres, with liberties of their own. And then that life began its march of honor, crowning itself in chivalry, unfolding in the ever richer organism of guild and order and free community all the energy and all the glory that sovereignty in one's own sphere contains. In our dear fatherland more strongly than anywhere. It almost seemed as if this land, parceled into its own polder-rings, could defend sovereignty in its own sphere against the sovereignty of the State more stoutly than any other. Philip found that out, when the singers of the Souter-psalms and the worshippers of the hedge-sermons collided in their turn — against their own will — with the sovereignty of the State. And in the century that followed, Stuart and Bourbon found it out, gentlemen, when the immortal sea-hero upon whose tomb of honor we here gaze — our glorious De Ruyter — withstood the resurgent royalism of the Charleses and the Louises on every sea and broke it on every coast. "I, skipper next to God, skipper of my own ship!" — that was the ineradicable sense of freedom which, with him, inspired the whole phalanx of our naval heroes, and which carried across every water, in a sailor's phrase, the royal claim of what in legal phrase is called: "sovereign in its own sphere!" But alas — before another century had passed, our countryman fell away from himself; Holland too sank into sin; and with our republic collapsed the last solid bulwark of freedom left on the continent of Europe. So the tide of royalism swelled. It began to tread down the lands, to trample the peoples, to goad the nations — until at last, in the most inflammable of those nations, the fire of vengeance broke out, every passion flared, and the Revolution of principle struck the crowned head from the Sovereign, to crown the sovereign people. A terrifying event — born of thirst for freedom, but also of hatred against the Messiah — which came only to pen freedom into a narrower cage! For the sovereign of one ballot-day placed himself, through that very ballot-box, by the next morning under absolute guardianship, stripped of will: first of the Jacobin club; then of the Napoleonic Caesar; soon of the most fair-seeming ideal of the State — realized in France in haste, with a wild grab; presently argued in Germany's circle of philosophers as a matter of right and reason. And so freedom lay once more in its disgrace, and for the second time one single sovereignty threatened to swallow all others. And what brought rescue then? No — not the restoration spirit of the Congress of Vienna. Not the prince-worship of Haller and De Maistre. Not the historical school, which in its physiological view rather smothered every higher principle. Not even the pseudo-constitutional system with its roi fainéant and its tyrannizing parties. But the Messiah — the Sovereign seated at the right hand of God — who, through the most beautiful Réveil that ever wakened the nations, quietly sent out among them once more a spirit of grace, of prayer, of faith. For by that very fact there arose, of itself, once more a sphere of its own, in which another Sovereign than earthly power was worshipped. A sphere in which men went down to the level of the soul; practiced mercy; and inspired the states "not as statesmen, but as confessors of the Gospel." Not through the machinery of politics but through moral force, a hope of the nations was thus born from within, from the soul outward. And not by ruling but by serving, the part of our people that honors Messiah — the pars Christiana — became, in our fatherland too, a national party in spite of itself. Not a faction, that is, a manufactured group; not a fraction, that is, a broken-off piece; but a people's party — a part of the people, in the sense of the old phrase in partes dilabi, "to fall apart into parts," said of what consists of parts — so that, if it might be, through this temporary dividing, the whole, the glorious unity of the people, might again be fired for a higher ideal. For that sphere Bilderdijk drew the circumference, when he took the axe of his song to the root of popular sovereignty. Da Costa set its keynote of life with his hymn to the Sovereign Messiah. And Groen van Prinsterer, at the last, wrote its constitutional creed in his telling formula: "sovereignty in its own sphere." And by the strength of that principle, descended from God himself, men have for these thirty years wrestled on their knees, gone after the straying, evangelized with the passion des âmes — the passion for souls. For that principle, foundation after foundation has risen to adorn our land as a dwelling-place of mercy. For that principle, scorn has been borne, rest renounced, gold laid on the altar. Men have labored for it among the people, pleaded for it before the throne, argued for it in the council chamber. "Sovereignty in its own sphere, under Jesus' sovereign majesty!" — that held this circle of brothers together, whatever else divided brothers. Hence a restless exertion that steeled our small strength by exercise; a rowing against the current that heightened our courage by its very sting; a pressa uberior — pressed down, the more fruitful — by which the compressed spring unfailingly leapt back. And thus, little by little, a growing up in spontaneity beyond fellow countrymen to whose superiority, on so many another field, we pay homage with shame at ourselves. So we fought for the indivisibility of sovereign authority: for the States-General as standing beside and with — not in, nor under — the government. So we upheld, not a theory of deterrence, but God's sovereign vengeance upon the man who dared shed man's blood. So our protest went out against laying hands, by compulsion, on the bodies of our children with the pus-laden lancet. So we prophesied the liberation of the Church. And so, at the last, our whole battle gathered itself into the battle for the people's school — when in that school the sovereignty of conscience, and the sovereignty of the domestic sphere, and the sovereignty of the pedagogical sphere, and the sovereignty of the spiritual sphere were all threatened alike. And since a principle, sowing seed after its kind, cannot rest until it has unfolded all its germs in scientifically ordered coherence; and since a part of a people, standing up for such a principle, may not cease until from the root of faith it has bred also the fruit of learning; and since such concentric learning can be cultivated nowhere but in a school built on the university plan — so it had to come, with iron consistency, by inner compulsion of life, to what today became fact: the launching of this ship — small, yes, and hardly seaworthy — but chartered under the sovereignty of King Jesus, resolved to show at every harbor of learning the flag of "sovereign in its own sphere!" II. "Sovereignty in its own sphere," I said, would also be the signature of our scholarly aim. — This too I take practically. Not abstract academic dryness, but firmness of principle, depth of insight, clarity of judgment — in one word, consecrated power of thought — as a power of resistance against whatever would use superior force to restrict the freedom in, and of, our human life. Do not forget: to look down on freedom with a suspicious eye lies in the inclination of every State power. The various spheres of life cannot do without the sphere of the State; for just as space cannot bound space, no sphere in the visible world bounds another — unless the State fixes their boundary in law. The State is thus the sphere of spheres: the only one that, among them all, encompasses the whole of our human life in its full extent. And therefore the State — in the nobler sense, not for itself but in the interest of all the spheres — is intent on strengthening its arm; and then, with that strengthened arm, it resists and tries to break every striving of those spheres toward expansion, toward broader ground. So it is now, again. Only mark the signs of the times. Did not even Mommsen, beneath the bold portrait he painted of Caesar, point to a return to the imperial line once drawn by that Caesar as the guiding rule for the statecraft of our century? Is Germany's chancellor a freedom-loving figure in your eyes? Or was it, perhaps, the man whom that chancellor humiliated so unspeakably deeply at Sedan? Freedom-loving or despotic — what impression has the people's tribune made on you who, in France's capital, has now replaced that man of Sedan on the strength of popular favor? And so it had to be — as discipline and as medicine both, for cowardly and unmanned nations which, through the atrophy of their moral resilience, made this bending-in of their freedom possible. The State is, after all, the supreme power on earth. There is no earthly power above the State that can compel the sovereign to do justice; and so — whether from ignoble lust of rule or from noble care for the common good — every State will by nature come to drive the iron hoop around the staves as tight as the shrinking of those staves will just allow. In the end, then, it depends on the spheres of life themselves whether they will flourish in freedom or groan under the coercion of the State. If they possess moral spring-force, they cannot be pressed in; they will not let themselves be bent. Whereas servility, once wrung into the slave's irons, loses even the right to complain. But here precisely is the sore spot: freedom is threatened at least as strongly from within each sphere, by sin, as at the border of that sphere, by the power of the State. When a man wants to drive the hoop tighter around the staves, he lights a fire inside the barrel — and more than the hammer-blow, it is that fire within that makes the staves shrink. And so it is with our liberties. In the core of every sphere of life there smolders, there smokes, a glow of passion from which the sparks of sin leap up; and that unholy burning, that accursed fire, undermines the moral vitality, weakens the spring-force of every sphere, and bends, in the end, the hardest staves. In every successful assault on freedom, therefore, the State can never be more than an accomplice. The chief culprit remains the citizen who forgot his duty — who, slackening his moral muscle in sin and sensual pleasure, lost the strength for his own initiative. Among a people healthy at its national core and still living healthily in its spheres, no State can move the boundary-posts of justice without that people setting itself against it in moral resistance, with God's help. Only when discipline gave way, and luxury crept in, and sin grew shameless, could theory bend what had gone slack, and a Napoleon kick in what was rotten. And if — partly through that very pressure — resilience had not again and again descended from God into those soulless spheres of life, to make of atoms, as the newest philosophy puts it, dynamids, centers of living force, then the last sphere of our own would long since have been broken through, and nothing would remain of freedom but the "sic transit" on its grave. Now among the means of defense that God gave to nobler peoples for maintaining their liberties is science — indeed science stands in the front rank. The man of Tarsus was, among the interpreters of the Holy Spirit, the scientifically trained one; and it was not from the contemplative John, nor from the practical James, but from the Pauline treasure of the spirit that Luther seized the freedom of the Reformation. I know well that science too could betray freedom, and more than once has betrayed it; but that was in spite of, not by virtue of, her holy mission. Taken in her true form, God sent her to us as an angel of light. For what robs the madman, the idiot, the drunkard of his human countenance — is it not precisely the absence of clear consciousness? And to come to clear consciousness, not of oneself only but of what exists outside ourselves — is that not science? To think God's thoughts after him — what He has thought before us, and above us, and in us? The consciousness of being and of life, not of one single person, but of humanity across all the ages! To be able to think into what is, and to gather up what is thus mirrored in our consciousness into our reason — that is a decoration of honor conferred by God upon our human nature. To possess wisdom is a divine trait in our being. Indeed, so far does the power of wisdom and of science reach, that the course of things mostly goes, not according to what reality is, but according to what man imagines that reality to be. Who says that ideas are matters of indifference? Ideas form public opinion; opinion forms the sense of justice; and as that sense stands, the stream of spiritual life thaws or freezes over. Hence whoever aims at influence for his principles cannot keep hovering in feeling; gets nowhere with imagination; comes only halfway even with his confession; and gains a grip on the public only when he has attained power in the world of thought as well — when he has learned to carry the impulse that drove him inwardly, the Deus in nobis, the God within us, over from what he senses into what he knows. Provided — and to this I hold strictly — provided that science too remain "sovereign in its own sphere," and not be corrupted from her nature under State guardianship or ecclesiastical wardship. Science too forms a sphere of life of her own, in which truth is sovereign, and in which under no circumstances may violation or rape of her law of life be tolerated. To do that would not only dishonor science; it would be sin against God. Our consciousness is like a mirror within us, in which images are cast from three worlds: from the world around us, from the world of our own being, and from the invisible world of spirits. And the demand of reason is now, first: to let each of those worlds mirror its images according to its own nature — the aisthēsis, that is, perception and sensation. Second: to catch what is mirrored with a pure eye — the noēsis, that is, the beholding of those images until we understand them. And third: to gather up harmoniously what has thus been caught — the gnōsis, that is, to see through what is seen, in its coherence, as necessary and as beautiful. Not speculation, then, but reflection — a mirroring within us. Science that makes wise. Out of life, for life. Ending in adoration of the only wise God! That sovereignty of science in her own sphere, Spinoza grasped; and for that reason our admiration honors Spinoza's character exactly as high as, by the moral yardstick, it places the cowardly Erasmus low. In Spinoza the organ, and hence the perception, was impure — and so his conclusion was bound to be a lie. But that he, seeing what he saw and as he saw it, steadfastly refused to lend himself to any violation of the sovereignty of science in her own sphere — no good Reformed man blames him for that, but sets him far above the wavering irresolution by which more than one man who knows what Spinoza never knew has been seduced into unprincipled compromise. Tooth and nail, therefore — for this reason among others — it must be maintained that the Church of Christ may never force her supremacy upon science. At the very real risk of suffering harm from science, the church must rather herself insist that science — without ever becoming a slave-girl — maintain the sovereignty due to her on her own ground, and live by the grace of God. True, there lurks here the satanic danger that some will degenerate into devils of pride and seduce science into arrogating what is not hers. But in the first place, a high spire simply cannot be climbed without the danger of a deep fall lying close beside it. And in the second place, what we saw just now of the tyranny of the State holds here of the tyranny of science: it cannot arise unless the church has first sunk spiritually; and likewise, by waking spiritually once more, the church of itself presses science — which came in God's name to chastise her — back within juster bounds. Not quite, but almost, the same is to be said of the State. Not quite — for even toward the sphere of science, as soon as science forms itself a visible organism in schools, the State remains the exousia diataktikē: the power that received authority to fix its sphere in law. Only let that State power, before it ever crosses that border onto the ground of science itself, reverently unloose the sandal from its foot, and lay aside a sovereignty which on that ground would not befit it. A science as handmaid of the State — such as the Ghibellines played off against the Guelphs; such as France's bureaucracy misused for mastering the people; such as German reaction tried to fashion for itself in the disgrace of Göttingen — is the prostituted self-abasement that forfeits every tenable claim to moral influence. But even where a nobler spirit animates the State, as in our own circles of authority; and even where, as among us, science is too proud to know anything of stooping — still it will prove a blessing to science on our soil too, and redound to her honor, if she, in her university life as well, comes to stand once more on her own root and, growing into a life of her own, thus outgrows the guardianship of the State. So, free in the midst of the people, once stood the schools of the prophets in Israel and the schools of Wisdom at Jerusalem. So freely once appeared the schools of the oldest philosophers in Greece, and of their imitators at Rome. So freely once showed themselves the schools of the first Christian scholars. And just as free, the ancient universities of Bologna and Paris. Not the forming of a framework by the State, into which science was then to be poured; but science stepping forward in life, and in that life creating a form for herself. It was in that free form that the university could labor at the liberating work of the Reformation; and not until the close of the last century did men conjure that free framework into a "branch of the civil service" — when the new-fashioned university let itself be bolted onto the State as one of its organs. To this it came, not by personal caprice, but by the press of events, by the enervation of the peoples; and it would border on absurdity to demand that the State now suddenly withdraw its hand from the university world. There is at present too little feeling for science among the multitude; too little open-handedness among the rich of the earth; too little energy of will in graduated circles, to risk it. For the present the State must go on supporting; provided — and on this we insist — provided the striving move only in the direction of liberation, and "sovereignty in its own sphere" be seized once more by science herself as her ideal. Is it then unscientific, that in this better direction a first shy step is now ventured by our School? On the State university, in the scales of fairness, press objections in great number. Money — it cannot be repeated enough — creates a power for him who gives it, and a power over him who receives it. That is why art (the art of song excepted), because she needs gold, could never durably lift the freedom of a people. Who can measure the influence which, through that State money, one single appointment — a Thorbecke, a Scholten, an Opzoomer — has exercised on the fate of the country and the course of the sciences? Where is the spiritual standard that can guide the State, in the higher and most decisive sciences, in choices of such consequence? Moreover: to compel the Jew and the Roman Catholic, by tax warrant, to help pay for a theological faculty that in fact is Protestant and was bound to become so — is there not, for the sense of justice, something in that which fails to satisfy? And if the law of the Realm acknowledges our right to a foundation of our own; and the Sovereign of this land, as was announced a moment ago, has received our free institution — pressed by none of these objections — into the sphere of law: does there not lie, in a university foundation carried by the people themselves, a beautiful prophecy for science and for the people's life alike? For look — here now is a group of men who were reviled as a "night school" not thirty years ago, and who today exhaust their strength for a scientific goal! The least regarded of the "unthinking" part of the nation, running up from the plow and from the meal-trough to bring their pennies together for a university to be founded. Elsewhere men labor for progress from above; they want to carry science down to the people. But is there not something more here — in a portion of the people that pinches its own comfort so that science may flourish? Is there a more practical solution to the problem of binding science to the organism of life? Must there not come, in men of science who live from this people's money, a growing-together with the people, and an aversion to all that is dry and abstract? And beyond that: is not giving itself already a power? Does not parting with money form a moral capacity? And who then can reckon the moral capital that accrues to our people precisely through this costly Foundation? Men complain of the scarcity of character — but by what will characters be formed more surely than by such free initiative of wide-awake citizens? And if elsewhere the university wheel runs oh-so-smoothly, through the compelling power of the tax-gatherers and the readiness of the paymasters — that too we do not envy. For if with us it is "the struggle for life," it is precisely in that struggle that the strength of the most glorious devotion is forged. There hides in the money entrusted to us another and a higher value than the metal weight of it: prayer clings to it, love clings to it, the sweat of faces clings to the gold that flows to us. III. So it has become clear how "sovereignty in its own sphere" is the striving out of which our Foundation was born; and it has been declared without concealment that "sovereignty in its own sphere" holds for us as the royal condition for all science that is to flourish. It remains for me only to plead the demand — the demand men contest — that this "sovereignty in its own sphere" be granted also to our principle; I mean our principle of being Reformed. In naming that name, however, let me at once cut off a misunderstanding that has risen again and again, and cast from us any suspicion that by "Reformed" we could ever mean anything other, or anything less, than genuine, pure Christianity. The merchant speaks of net weight; the minter of fine gold; the silversmith of sterling standard; Scripture of unadulterated nard; and a certain newspaper on the Spaarne calls itself "the Sincere." In the same way we too, if we cared to play the eccentric, might not incorrectly speak of a "net" Christianity, a "fine" Christianity, an "unadulterated" Christianity, the "genuine" Christianity — a Christianity of "sterling standard." But weaning ourselves from such strange terms, we prefer to speak, as usage and history require, of Reformed — and thereby to distinguish sharply the imitation, the counterfeit, and the poorly grown from the Christianity that is according to the Word of God. To say merely "Christian" says nothing. For that can still be Roman. It can be Remonstrant too. Not a single modernist has yet given up the "Christian name." Has it not even been seen that men who count the denial of God's existence an honor hoisted the false flag of "Christian," in the full States-General, on the gable of a de-Christianized school? Something must be added, then. There is no escaping the confusion of tongues at any lesser price. And since sovereignty in its own sphere holds on spiritual ground as well — since it is not for the individual to invent names for principles and definitions for those principles, that right belonging solely to the authoritative organ that bears the historic life within that sphere — it was not for us to choose another name, nor our place to confess our principle at our own whim. We simply had to come forward under the "Reformed name" that we, as sons of the Dutch Reformation, historically bore; and to understand by that name not what pleased us, but what was the church's lawful judgment — confessing once more, courageously and without reservation, the Canons of Dort. We do not, for that reason, reject our Lutheran brothers. To look down on other Christians would be sin to us. Only this much we ask: that no one force us to trade what is finer in our eyes for something less fine; and that we be permitted to rebuild the Reformed temple, fallen in ruins, in unmixed Reformed style. In this address too I have striven for that, and have therefore pressed the sovereignty of God into the foreground — as Scripture demands, and as Calvin went before us in doing — because it alone stirs life to the very root, and overcomes all fear of men, the fear of Satan himself. And should anyone ask whether "sovereignty in its own sphere" is truly drawn from the heart of Scripture and from the treasure of Reformed life, I would beg that man first to sound the organic principle of faith of Scripture in its depth; and then to mark the tribal edict at Hebron for David's crowning; to note Elijah's resistance to Ahab's tyranny; the disciples' refusal to bow to the police ordinance of Jerusalem; and not least, to listen — from the lips of their Lord — to the coin-saying about what is God's and what is Caesar's. And if you come to Reformed life itself: do you not know Calvin's magistratus inferiores, the lesser magistrates? Does not sovereignty in its own sphere lie at the foundation of the whole presbyterian church order? Did not almost all Reformed lands incline to a confederate form of existence? Have civil liberties not blossomed most luxuriantly precisely among Reformed nations? And can it be disputed that domestic peace, decentralization, and autonomy — for the civil community too — are, even now, best guaranteed on the soil of the issus de Calvin, the sons of Calvin? It is wholly in the Reformed spirit, then, that we now ask sovereignty in its own scientific sphere for our own principle as well. To sit down at one common university table, under a treaty of neutrality, with the science that lives from another principle — that we may not do. I do not deny that even for the non-Christian authority there exists a fear of the high God and of his justice, which Calvin honored even in pagan tyrants. But such a devout trait is still nothing more than the foundation, with at most a piece of wall upon it — no roof, no windows. Or, in a still apter image: what have you, I ask, in a great tower-hulk raised high, but lacking its spire — and with it the carillon, the clockwork, the weathervane; in short, everything for which it was built? More acceptable would then still be that other proposal: one great Academy of the Realm, to which the government would supply nothing but lecture halls with their lecterns, plus museums and laboratories — with the right for every scholar to teach there, and the right for every sphere to place its scholars there. A scientific Central Station, where all the lines would run together, but each with its own direction and its own management. Yet even so, the royal right of every principle to "sovereignty in its own sphere" would be violated from both sides. For does not history teach that science took an entirely different shape in every sphere of life that had a principle of its own? There has been, after all, a Greek science, an Arabic science, a Scholastic science — which may not speak to us, but which within its own sphere was nonetheless lived through and thought through by giant thinkers in whose shadow none of us could be placed. Likewise, after the Middle Ages, science shows an easily distinguishable face at Roman and at non-Roman universities. The line of philosophers who arose with Kant and after him formed, according as they rested in the subject or in the object, schools of science that excluded one another. The monist and the atomist — how will you wed them? Indeed, so compelling and dominating is the power of a principle that Hegel's force of thought, as all acknowledge, produced a system entirely its own in theology, in law, in physics — on every field; so that to learn criminal law in Hegel's school and civil law in Herbart's necessarily confounds all sense of justice. And if this impossibility of weaving one garment together shows itself already where principles of thought differ, how much more strongly does the necessity of separate sovereignty come to light with a principle of life! As Fichte's example showed, so long as only a principle of thought is in play, a return to what was first rejected remains possible. But with a principle of life it is not. A principle of life is rooted in facts. Or stronger still — like the Christian principle — in a living person. In a person whose appearance was the setting of a crisis in the midst of the world, at the center-point of world history, at the center of the world's thinking too. For question now that living person, that Christ; question merely his interpreters clothed with authority — and what do you hear? Does that Rabbi of Nazareth declare that his knowledge weds itself to that of the earthly wise? Do his apostles tell you that studying on at Jerusalem or at Athens will bring you, gradually and of itself, to his higher knowing? On the contrary — that Rabbi impresses on you that his treasure of wisdom is hidden from the wise and the understanding, and revealed rather to little children. And the scientifically trained Paul draws between his formerly acquired learning and the principle of life now planted in him a chasm so wide, so deep, so uncrossable, that back and forth — as folly and as wisdom — he sets the world of thought of the one principle against the world of life of the other. Shall we then pretend that we can grow together, on one root, what by the positive declaration of Jesus' divine self-consciousness stands on entirely different roots? We shall not venture it, gentlemen! Rather, considering that with a principle something begins — that from an own principle something of its own takes its beginning — we shall maintain, for our principle and for that of our opponents alike, a sovereignty of its own across the whole sphere of thought. That is to say: as they, from their principle and by the method that fits their principle, raise a house of the sciences that glitters even though it does not tempt us — so we too, from our principle and according to the method that suits our principle, shall let a tree of our own shoot up, whose branch and leaf and blossom are fed from its own sap. We simply claim to be aware of something, to perceive something, which on the other side is declared self-deception. So be it: to pass for fools on that account is as necessary to us as it is impossible for us not to repeat after the poet of Proverbs that "the ungodly, in our days too, does not understand knowledge." Not as though he were our inferior in learning. Likely he is our superior. But because he says that what stands fast for us as fact in Christ is no fact; and declares, likewise, that he has not found in his soul what our consciousness grasped in ours. Faith in the Word of God — objectively infallible in Scripture, subjectively given us by the Holy Spirit — that is what draws the dividing line. Not as if the knowledge of others rested on certainty of intellect, and ours merely on faith. From faith — some faith, whatever it be — all knowledge proceeds. You lean on God; or you set out from your own self; or you hold fast to your ideal. The man who believes nothing does not exist. At the very least: whoever had nothing that stood immediately fast for him could not even find a starting point for his thinking; and how should the man whose thinking lacks every starting point ever investigate anything scientifically? What is meant, then, is indeed a building of our own alongside what others have built, with nothing in common but the yard at the door, the view through the windows, and a printing press that, like a letter-carrier, keeps up the commerce of ideas. For we too grant that a battle of ideas, back and forth, is possible and necessary — but never over anything except starting point and direction. Once starting point and direction are fixed, then — provided you draw your line true — the drawing of your line is given; and according as you stand to the left or find yourself to the right, everything appears differently to you, and every argument thrown against you lacks, for you, the force of persuasion. Rightly, therefore, every organic thinker mocks the atomistic pretense that every person, growing up, must think through all systems and search through all confessions in order then to choose the best for himself. No one can do such a thing, and no one does it. There is neither time nor thinking-power available for it. And that he himself did it, or that anyone did it, only the still-unwise can imagine of himself, or believe of others — the man who himself does not yet understand what science is. This so-called mustering of all systems breeds nothing but superficiality; it lays waste the thinking, spoils the character, and makes the brain unfit for solider work. Believe me: not by nosing from doorstep to doorstep down the corridors of every house, but by studying one solidly built house up to the ridgepole, does your knowledge of building gain solidity. "Free" in the sense of "loose from her principle," then, our science shall not be. That would be the freedom of the fish on dry land; of a flowering plant pulled out of its pot of earth; or, if you like, of a day-laborer from Drenthe, loosed from his village bonds and suddenly set down in Fleet Street or on the Strand. No — strictly and inexorably we bind ourselves, in our own house, to a fixed rule of life, convinced that under a firm house-order the strength of every domestic life thrives best. For the most generous freedom on scientific ground lies in this alone: that the door opens for whoever wants to leave; that no other man comes to play master in your house; but also that every other man may build just as freely — on the foundation of his own principle, in the style of his own method, with the result he has found for the cornice. And if you ask, finally, whether we desire this separate scientific development not for theology only, but for all the faculties — indeed, if you can hardly suppress the smile on your lips when someone jeers at "Christian medicine" and "Christian logic" — then hear our answer to that objection too. What — do you suppose that we, confessing God's revelation as the starting point of our striving, as it was reformed again after its deformation, would draw from it only as theologians, and then, as physicians and as jurists and as philologists, disdain this wellspring once more? Is there, in your eyes, any science worthy of the name that is divided into trade-knowledge by ticket-windows? Take the talk about the medical faculty. It is not a sick mammal, after all, but a human being, created in the image of God, that medical science would bless with health. Then judge for yourself whether — according as one does or does not see in that human being a moral creature, destined for something higher in soul and body alike, bound to God's Word — you will conceal his approaching death from him, or tell him of it; will advise or dissuade the anesthetizing of the woman in labor; will compel vaccination or leave it to free choice; will lay self-mastery or indulgence on the passionate youth as his duty; will curse the mother's fruitfulness with Malthus or bless it with Scripture; will guide the sick of soul by the psyche or numb them physically; whether — to name no more — you approve cremation; admit vivisection unconditionally; and whether you wish the syphilitic poison to go on being checked in society at the price of degrading authority and dishonoring human worth by the most detestable of all inspections. — What shall I say of the juridical faculty? As if — according as you see in man a husk-shedding product of nature or a sinner guilty unto judgment, and in law itself an organ of nature developing by its function or a jewel descending from God himself, bound to his Word — criminal law did not choose itself another aim, and the law of nations another rule. When, quite apart from science, the Christian conscience rises in protest against the reigning political economy, against the commercial customs in vogue, against the predatory character of social relations; when in your civil law all our Christian people presses for a return to decentralization through "sovereignty in its own sphere"; and when in our constitutional law no fewer than three separate "Christian" schools have arisen — can you still name one chair in the faculty of the jurists that is untouched by the clash of principles? — I grant: if our faculty of natural science confined itself strictly to measuring and weighing, the wedge of principle could at least not be driven into its door-panel. But who does that? What natural scientist operates without hypotheses? Where is the man who — practicing his science as a human being and not as a measuring-instrument — does not view what he sees through subjective glasses; and does not dot in what he can no longer see of the circle according to opinion that is always subjective? The man who reckons up for you the price of the printed paper and the number of drops of ink pressed through the press — does he thereby know how to value, in any higher sense, the book you published, your pamphlet, your book of songs? Does the worth of the choicest embroidery resolve into so many skeins of floss-silk and an ell of canvas? Or better still: does not the whole creation lie before the eyes of every natural scientist like one ravishing painting — and is the splendor of that work of art really appraised by the gold of the frame around it, the yards of cloth beneath it, and the pounds of paint upon it? — And what shall I still say to you of the faculty of letters? Of course, "learning to read" words and "declining" words has nothing to do with being for or against Messiah. But when, going further, I unlock for you the art-palace of Hellas, or step inside Rome's world of power, does it not matter whether I call back the spirit of those peoples in order to banish the spirit of the Christ once more — or place it under the spirit of Christ, by human and by divine reckoning both? Does the study of the Semitic languages not become a different study, according as I see in Israel the people of absolute revelation, or at most a people with a genius for piety? Does philosophy remain one and the same, whether over there it still chases the "ideal being," or with us confesses, in the Christ, the ideal "become flesh"? Will world history, perhaps, arrive at one identical conclusion whether it equates the cross with Socrates' cup of poison, or takes it in view as the center-point of all history? And — to name no more — will the history of the fatherland kindle the young man's heart with one same fire, no matter whether Fruin unfolds it, or Nuyens, or Groen van Prinsterer — ah, if only he still lived! — in its heroic beauty? And how could it be otherwise, gentlemen? Man, in his antithesis of fallen sinner or self-unfolding creature of nature, returns — as the "subject that thinks" or as the "object that compels thinking" — in every faculty, in every science, in every investigator. Oh, no single piece of our world of thought can be hermetically sealed off from the other pieces; and there is not a thumb's breadth in the whole domain of our human life of which the Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: "Mine!" That cry we too declare we have heard; and only at that cry did we set ourselves to this work — far too great for our arm. We had heard brothers lament their tragic powerlessness: because their science did not fit their principle, they stood defenseless with all their science, unable to plead their principle with a strength proportioned to that principle's honor. We had overheard the sighing of our Christian people, who in the shame of their self-abasement were learning again to pray for heads to lead them, shepherds to feed them, prophets to inspire them. We realized: the honor of the Christ may not be left lying trampled under jeering and under scorn. As truly as we loved him with the love of our soul, there must be building again in his name. And then it availed nothing to look at our small strength, or at the superior power of the opposition, or at the absurdity of so bold an undertaking. The fire kept glowing in our bones. There was a Mightier One than we, who drove us and spurred us on. We could not stay at rest. In spite of ourselves we had to go forward. Even the fact that a portion of our own brothers, advising for the present against any building of our own, preferred to go on lodging with Humanism, was to us a most painful cause of silent shame — yet it only drove that inward urge to stronger pressure; for now, with even such men hesitating, the future of our principle of life was plainly threatened all the more gravely. And so our little School stepped into life: blushing to bear the very name of university; poor in money; very soberly endowed with scientific strength; and, as for men's favor, weaned from it rather than sated with it. And what its course will now be, how long its life — oh, the thousand questions that hang together with its future cannot crowd more strongly into your doubting thoughts than they have stormed in this heart! Only by looking again and again to our holy principle did the weary head, after every wave that broke over us, lift itself just as bravely out of the waters. If this cause were not from the Mighty One of Jacob, how could it stand? For I do not exaggerate: what we attempt with the founding of this School is to go in against, and to row up against, everything that is called great — a world of scholars, a whole century, a century of such tremendous allure. Look down, then, if your self-regard thinks it must, upon our persons, upon our strength, upon our scientific significance — freely. "To count God everything and every man nothing" is the Calvinist creed that gives you full right to do so. This one thing only I beg of you — even were you our fiercest adversary — do not withhold from the zeal that inspires us the toll of your respect. For that confession from which we swept the dust away was once the soul-cry of a trampled nation. That Scripture before whose authority we bow once comforted, as God's infallible witness, the sorrowing in your own family lines. And that Christ whose name we honor in this Foundation — was he not the Inspirer, the Chosen, the Adored of your own fathers? Suppose even — as has been written in the study and sung after in the blast-furnaces — suppose that by your own creed it were truly finished with Scripture, and Christianity a conquered standpoint: even then I ask, has that Christianity not been, in your eyes too, historically, too imposing, too majestic, too holy a phenomenon to collapse in disgrace and to fall without honor? Or is there no noblesse oblige anymore? And could a banner such as we carried down from Golgotha ever be allowed to fall into the enemy's hands — so long as the utmost had not been tried, one arrow still lay unshot, and there still lives on this soil a bodyguard, however small, of Him who was crowned through Golgotha? To that question — and with this, gentlemen, I close — to that question a "By God, never!" has resounded in our soul. Out of that "Never" this Foundation was born. And for that "Never," as an oath of loyalty to a higher principle, I ask an echo — might it be an Amen — from every heart that loves this fatherland! *** It remains for me, before this ceremony is closed with thanks to God, to speak a word of my own to each of the circles united in this hall. Permit me then, first, to turn to you, Excellency, Minister of the King, with courteous thanks for the honor of your high presence, and with a modest commendation of the Foundation that has been opened in the good graces of the government of this land. In 1876 our revered King wrote into his law the right of his people — acknowledged already in 1848 — to freedom in higher education as well. May it give His Majesty, may it give Your Excellency, satisfaction that only four years later that law has proved not superfluous, and the people are using that freedom. And since the King's Minister who then defended the law declared, on the 11th of March 1876, that if Amsterdam obtained for its municipal university the right to confer degrees with civil effect, "then the question must arise that others too demand equal rights, and one will in all reason have to grant them the same right" — permit me to close my homage to you with the prayer that, should we one day earn our spurs, no lesser fairness than spoke in those words may preside among the Counselors of the Crown. Honorable Burgomaster, Aldermen, and Secretary of this city — to you too my respectful homage. To you especially, Head of this city! To greet in the Burgomaster a former professor is too rare a privilege, for the dedicator of a school of higher learning, not to dare the boldest hopes. Beside the elder daughter, not cheaply bought, whom Pallas Athena gave to your predecessor, now to win a younger daughter of Minerva without price and without money — that can only be welcome to the heart of the Father of the City, as we so gladly call you, for the sake of your beloved Amsterdam. Our historic Amsterdam was, we thought, the city marked out of itself for so historic a foundation. May Amsterdam's daily government, then, not withhold from us henceforth the goodwill it has already shown us so surprisingly — not least by coming here today. Learned Sir, Rector Magnificus and Secretary of this city's University! Rivalry of rank was of old rarely known in the respublica litterarum — I do not say within the faculties, but among the schools; how else could I, as Rector of this small young school, look up to you, illustrious regent of the elder one! You know it: in your own Senate too, years ago already, there sounded the call for a "free university." Could our Moll ever have guessed that one would one day rise beside the Municipal University, in that same Amsterdam, on the foundation chosen by us? And rise, surely, without waking envy? Ah — we are too small for that. The more so since your aim is more local, ours reaches rather to the whole fatherland. May the honor of the classically trained, then, always keep the desired understanding between us; and may the love of truth, the love of science, remain common to us both — even living as we do from different principles. From the government and its corporations I turn, in the second place, to the interpreters of the life of society — in Chamber, Association, and Press. Right Honorable Members of the States-General: a fruit also of your unwearied labor is the School founded today. In standing up stoutly for our people's liberties, above all in the matter of education, you have never failed. Rather did your manly word ring out untiringly for the freedom of the academies too. Your tribunate of the people — resting on the tribunate of the Son of God — has brought a turn, already perceptible, in our political and in our social life. For this our Foundation thanks you. For this our people wrote your names with its heart's blood. Find here then, seated in the midst of your people, in the grateful homage that every eye brings you, a reward for so much faithfulness and so much devotion — a reward not, surely, indifferent to you either! Gentlemen of the boards of the Christian Associations, esteemed brothers! One with you in the aim of turning back the de-Christianizing of the nation, our Foundation invited you to its birth-feast. The courtesy — still more, the proof of love — of your coming is prized by us very highly. Not every one of us views the battle alike; but at one same banner of the cross, all our soldiers' oath is sworn to Messiah. To serve our dear fatherland, our people, and in that people the Christus Consolator, the Christ the Comforter — each in his own way, in humility and in love — be that our contest of honor for his Name! Esteemed gentlemen, representatives of the press. A power rests in your hands unknown to our old academies, but with which the younger university means to reckon from the very start. Nor do I desert my traditions when, as Groen van Prinsterer's pupil, I honor the press too as a power in the nation. Groen first broke the old routine by taking a place himself in your ranks; should I not count it an honor, then, to have stepped into line with you as one of your own! So — as Rector of this School, but also as an old comrade-in-arms — I ask for the newborn Foundation the salute of honor of your word! And coming at last, drawing into a narrower circle, to you who are more personally bound to this Foundation: permit me first to offer you the thanks of a brother's heart, esteemed gentlemen and brothers, Directors of this School! To live, to labor, to sacrifice for science — for science that honored Christ — was from of old the honor of the Amsterdam merchant class. To see that class, now in league with brothers from the whole land as provincial Directors and provincial Secretaries, in the regiment of such a School — does that not console, inspire, uplift? May God's favor and the people's readiness make lighter the heavy task you took upon your shoulders; and may it be given me so to serve you, as teacher and as rector, that your trust be not put to shame, nor your choice ever bring you regret. With that same prayer I come to you, gentlemen Curators, esteemed brothers. Deeply I feel what it meant for you, as men of science, to accept the scientific leadership of a School whose founding charter came from Dordrecht. But that you dared it, and let that scorn fall upon you, is for that very reason more than a doctor's diploma — it is a patent of nobility, of courage and moral devotion, for which I thank you, this School honors you, and our people loves you. May the finding of men fit for your use be given you, by higher grace, as fruit of prayer! Fruit of prayer — may all our science be that too, esteemed colleagues, dearly loved brothers, with whom it shall now be granted me to lay the first stone for this building. On our labor most of all it will depend; for it was for the fruit of that labor that this field was plowed. Oh — do you not sometimes shrink back with me, thinking into the tremendous difficulty of the task we have accepted? And yet you will not turn back — will you? For you too know the pressure, the drive, of a higher must. Besides, in one thing we may surely glory: the danger of rank-strife, that plague of the faculties, is cut off among us for good — because the subjective aims of us all have given themselves captive to the majesty of the objective, the historical, the authority-clothed, the officially spoken Word. To you, esteemed gentlemen and brothers who came here from abroad, I bring, in the name of our whole Foundation, thanks for such surprising brotherly loyalty. To receive tokens of sympathy from Scotland, from Germany, even from America — see, that too made us think of Dordrecht, where once all the Reformed nations were present! No more than science does the Reformed confession know national borders. Be welcome, then, in our midst; and take home to your brothers the congratulation, the greeting of peace, the blessing-wish of this circle! Reverend and learned gentlemen, Ministers of the Word, esteemed brothers: to see you too seated here in such broad rows heightens in no small measure the joy of this festal day. You know it — we are of no church, nor for a church. The life of science forms for us a sphere with its own sovereignty, and therefore an independent life. Not to us, but to the King of the church, belongs the decision what shall become of his purified — and still to be purified — churches in these lands. Seeing the command, we are blind to the outcome. But even so we honor your calling highly; your stout confessing refreshes us; we set great store by your public goodwill. For you are, after all, theologians too; leaders of the multitude too; priests, too, who pray for the people. Serve us, then: as theologians, with your support; as leaders of the people, with your commendation; as priestly intercessors, with prayer — for this Foundation also — in the house of our God. And when I look, last of all, to you who as Founders, Members, Benefactors, District Heads, or City Ward Leaders would bring your gold, your time, your effort as an offering for our Foundation — beloved brothers in our Lord Jesus Christ: speaking after the manner of men, our existence lies in your hand; the provisions we shall find along the road; more still, the possibility of our growth. For this you know: we are far from there yet. The number of professors must at least be tripled. Tripled, then, must also be the tensile strength of your love and devotion — or... what this school by its design must become, it never becomes. And yet, that it shall be built out full — yes, that we dare to hope, however bold that hope may seem to you. Because of what we have already seen. Because of the precious faithfulness with which many a brother has already surprised us. Not least because of the enthusiasm for this holy cause that I have sometimes seen glistening in a woman's eye. And then... for one thing more! Because you have among you, as co-founder, the man for whom my last word shall be — Groen's bosom friend — I mean you, noble Elout, venerable gray-head, with your penetrating, always kindly eye. What a piece of history is the span of your years! What a line of princes have you not served! What storms have not passed over your now weary head! And that you still wished to be here; still brought us your gift; and spoke a word of fatherly blessing over us younger men — how you would have stolen the heart of this people by it, had they not, long before this Foundation was ever thought of, already thanked God for possessing you. But let me at least say this to you openly: how our Reformed people prizes this brotherly descending of the great ones of the earth to the simple citizen. Let me tell you how our historic people feels itself bound to those historic persons who, like you, call up before us two generations already gone down to the grave. And let me tell you above all how our people — a people that grew great with the Bible and wishes to die with that Bible — delights, with praise to its covenant God, in such humble confessional faithfulness to the Word of Holy Scripture, in a man of your position, your wisdom of life, your years. And if the beginning of all things was ever for you in prayer, and the end of all things in thanksgiving, then your soul surely carries my petition too, as the quiet close of my address now likewise rises in praise to the Almighty. To thank You — O our Father who art in heaven, Wellspring of all truth, Fountain of all true knowledge, Source of all wisdom! Straying from You, Your creature finds nothing but darkness, nothing but dullness, nothing but bondage of soul. But near You — bathed in Your life — then light streams around us; strength tingles through our veins; and the freedom of faith unfolds in blessed rapture. Adorable, eternal Majesty, look down in favor upon this Foundation also. Let it draw from You its gold, its strength, all its wisdom. Let it never swear by anything lesser, never by anything other, than Your holy Word. And You who test our inmost being — O Judge also of our nation, and Arbiter also of the schools of learning — tear down the walls of this Foundation Yourself, and blot it out from before Your face, if it should ever intend anything else, ever will anything else, than to glory in that sovereign, that freely-reigning grace which is in the cross of the Son of Your most tender love! Lord, LORD God! In Your Name alone — in Your Name let all our help stand! Amen. And herewith I declare this ceremony ended, and the Free University opened! I have spoken.

SOUVEREINITEIT IN EIGEN KRING. Excellentie, Minister des Konings. Edelachtbare Heeren Burgemeester, Wethouders en Secretaris dezer stad. Hooggeleerde Heeren Rector Magnificus en Secretaris der Stedelijke Universiteit. Hoogedelgestrenge Heeren Leden der Staten-Generaal. Hooggeachte Heeren en Broeders, die als Directeuren en Curatoren deze School bestuurt, of als Stichters, Leden en Districts- of Wijkhoofden hielpt aan haar bouw. Hooggeleerde Heeren Hoogleeraren aan Amsterdams beide Universiteiten. Weledel Zeergeleerde Heeren Doctoren der verschillende wetenschappen. Weleerwaarde Zeergeleerde Heeren Bedienaren van den Woorde Gods. Hooggeëerde Heeren Bestuursleden van Vereenigingen, wier doel met het onze samenvalt in het te keer gaan van de ontkerstening der natie. Weledele Heeren Studenten van verschillende Universiteiten. Zeergeëerde Heeren, die in week- of dagbladorganen zijt der openbare meening. En voorts gij allen, die van wat naam of staat ook herwaarts opkwaamt, om deze plechtigheid met uwe tegenwoordigheid te vereeren. Zeer geachte Toehoorders! Zeer gewenschte Toehoorderessen! Zij, in wier handen de hoogheid over deze Stichting rust, droegen mij de taak der eere op, om hun school voor hooger onderwijs in te wijden, door ze op het publieke levensterrein in te leiden bij overheid en volk. Ik bidde U, mij in onbekrompene mate daarbij het stilzwijgend profijt te gunnen van een welwillend oor en een inschikkelijk oordeel. Een bede, waarvan U zelven de ernst toe zal spreken, indien Ge overweegt, hoe mij niet het houden van eene inaugureele ambtsrede wacht, noch ook het uitspreken van een rectorale verhandeling, maar hoe ik, met afsnijding van die stiller schuilhoeken der wetenschappelijke onderzoeking, door den aard mijner taak word heengedrongen naar dat glibberig terrein van het publieke leven, waar netels aan alle heggen branden en doornen U wonden bij elken tred. Immers het valt niet te verbergen, en verbloemen wil geen onzer het, niet liefde voor afgetrokken wetenschap dreef ons als Maecenaten tot dit werk aan; maar wat uitdreef tot dit gewaagde, zoo niet overmoedige pogen, was het diep ingeprente plichtsbesef, dat, hetgeen we deden, gedaan moest worden, om Christus' wil; voor den naam des Heeren; in het hooger, heiliger belang van ons volk en ons land. Zoo geheel onschuldig is ons optreden dus allerminst; en we zijn er diep van overtuigd, dat de belangstelling, die, door goed en kwaad gerucht heen, op alle manier deze Stichting reeds vooruit liep, eer ze optrad, en ze thans bij haar opening verzellen mag, in niets onze personen geldt, maar uitsluitend voortsproot uit den indruk, dien het publiek ontving, dat Nederland hierbij een gebeurtenis toeschouwde, wier spoor allicht teekenen kon in de toekomst der natie. Indien we toch, naar hooger toetssteen gekeurd, ons bij den bestaanden toestand konden nederleggen, waartoe zouden we dit werk ondernomen hebben? Er ligt in ons ondernemen dus, hoe zacht ook uitgesproken, zeker protest tegen wat ons omringt, met een voorgeven, dat er iets beters te vinden ware; en reeds die overweging maakt beschroomd, maakt verlegen, al ware het slechts door den schijn van aanmatiging, die als schaduw achter haar aanglijdt. Dit kon ergeren, dit kon zeer doen; en ik haast mij daarom U te verzekeren, dat (hetzij we zien op de macht van wetenschap én invloed én goud, die tegen ons over staat; hetzij we met beschaming onze eigen geringheid en onmacht indenken) niet hooge inbeelding, maar slechts rustige ootmoed, zich uitspreekt in de verzekerdheid van ons woord. We bleven liever schuil; te zien dat anderen voorgingen, zou ons zooveel rustiger wezen. Maar nu dit niet kon; nu we moesten handelen; nu traden we dan ook op den voorgrond; voor der menschen afkeer of toeneiging wel ver van onverschillig; maar toch onze gedragslijn uitsluitend regelend naar wat o. i. geëischt wierd door het richtsnoer van de eere onzes Gods. Gij wacht daarbij, dat ik van de in te leidene School U zegge, wat ze in Neêrlands tuin komt doen; waarom ze de muts der vrijheid op de speer zwaait, en wat ze zoo ingespannen tuurt op het boek van Gereformeerde religie. Laat mij het antwoord op die drie vragen door het ééne denkbeeld van „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" aanéén mogen schakelen, door op die Souvereiniteit in eigen kring U te wijzen, als het stempel dat onze Stichting draagt in haar nationale beteekenis, in haar wetenschappelijk bedoelen, en in haar karakter van Gereformeerd. I. In haar nationale beteekenis U onze Stichting voor te stellen, zou dan het eerste deel van mijn rede zijn. — Ook het leven ónzer natie, M. H.! doorworstelt in deze ontzaglijke eeuw een crisis; een crisis aan haar met alle meêrekenende natiën gemeen; een crisis doortrekkend in heel de wereld der denkende menschheid. Nu gaat het in elke crisis om een aangetast leven, waaraan door het ziekteproces, òf levensverjonging wordt geprofeteerd, òf ondergang wordt gedreigd in den dood. Zoo vraag ik dan, wat is hier dit „aangetaste leven"? Om welk een inzet gaat het in déze crisis ook voor ónze natie? En wie herhaalt dan nog, wat men eertijds placht te antwoorden, als ging de kamp om vooruitgang of behoud; om éénzijdig of veelzijdig; om ideaal of werkelijkheid; of ook om arm of rijk? Het ontoereikende, het onevenredige, het ondiepe van elk dier diagnosen trad daartoe in te helder licht. „Clericaal" en „liberaal" is toen parool geworden, als gold het misbruik of zuivering van geestelijken invloed. Tot ook dit scherm minachtend om wierd gestooten; en uit het middenpunt naar al wijder kring het besef doordrong; eerst slechts door de hoogere Zieners onzer eeuw gegrepen: t. w. dat het in de huidige crisis der volkeren om geen schakeering, om geen belang, om geen recht, maar om een levenden persoon gaat; om Hem die eens zwoer Koning te wezen; en om die Souvereine Koningspretentie op Golgotha zijn leven liet aan een kruis. „De Nazarener onze heilige bezieler; bezielend ideaal; ideaal genie der vroomheid!" riep men lang nog op de gulste tonen; maar de historie wraakte dien lof als in weêrspraak met diens Nazareners eigen beweren. Niets geringers dan Messias, Gezalfde, dus aller koningen Souverein te wezen, en „alle macht in hemel en op aarde" te bezitten, was de uitspraak van zijn kalm, en dies als glas zoo doorzichtig, godmenschelijk bewustzijn. Geloofsheld niet; niet „martelaar der eere", maar Mélek, rex, Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων, Koning der Joden, d. i. Souvereiniteitsdrager, stond als de misdadige aanmatiging, waarom hij sterven moest, op het schandbord aan den paal van het kruis. En om díe Souvereiniteit; om het bestaan of niet bestaan van die macht in den uit Maria geborene; woelen heftig als in de drie eerste eeuwen ook nu weêr de geesten die denken, de machten die heerschen, de natiën die meêleven. Dat Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων de reddende waarheid, waar alle volk een Amen op spreekt, óf... de principieele leugen, die door alle volk bestreden dient, ziedaar de Souvereiniteitsquaestie, gelijk ze, eens in het bloed van den Nazarener aan de orde gesteld, ook nu weêr een scheur trok door de wereld van heel ons geestelijk, van heel ons menschelijk, heel ons nationaal bestaan. Wat is Souvereiniteit? Gaat ge niet meê, zoo ik ze omschrijf als: het gezag dat recht bezit, plicht heeft en macht oefent, om elken weêrstand tegen zijn wil te breken én te wreken? En spreekt dan ook in U het onuitroeibaar volksbesef niet, dat de oorspronkelijke, volstrekte Souvereiniteit in geen schepsel kan rusten, maar moet saâmvallen met de Majesteit Gods. God Drieëenig moet ook Uw ziel als éénig absoluut Souverein proclameeren, indien Ge anders in Hem als Uitdenker en Schepper, als Insteller en Bestemmer aller dingen gelooft. Mits, en hier leg ik nadruk op, mits men er bij erkenne, dat deze hooge Souverein zijn gezag overdroeg en overdraagt aan menschelijke personen; zoodat ge feitelijk op aarde, in het zichtbare nooit rechtstreeks op God zelf stuit, maar het souverein gezag steeds voor u op ziet treden in een ambt van menschen. En hierbij nu, bij dat leggen van Gods Souvereiniteit in een menschelijk ambt, ontstaat de uiterst belangrijke vraag: hoe het met die overdracht toegaat? Of namelijk die alomvattende Souvereiniteit Gods ongedeeld op éénen enkelen mensch wordt overgedragen; dan wel of, wie Souverein op aarde heet, de macht tot afdwingen van gehoorzaamheid slechts in beperkten kring bezit; een kring, begrensd door andere kringen waarin één naast hem Souverein is; niet hij? Op díe vraag toch verschilt het antwoord, naar gelang ge in de Openbaringssfeer staat of er buiten. Immers, „zoover doenlijk ongedeeld, maar dan ook alle kring doordringend!" heette vanouds het antwoord op die vraag bij hen in wier denkwereld geen plaats bestond voor een bijzondere openbaring. „Zoover doenlijk", want de Souvereiniteit Gods over wat boven is, valt buiten 's menschen bereik, en over de natuur buiten 's menschen macht, en over het lot buiten 's menschen schikking. Maar voor het overige, dan ja, zonder „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring," de Staatsmacht onbepaald gebiedend; beschikkend over de personen, over hun leven, over hun rechten, over hun consciëntie, tot zelfs over hun geloof. Veel goden was het toen, en diensvolgens, door het vis unita fortior, de ééne onbeperkte Staat imposanter, majestueuzer dan de gedeelde godenmacht. En even daardoor de Staat, in den Caesar belichaamd, ten leste zelf God geworden. De god-„Staat" die geen andere „staten" naast zich kon dulden. Dus de hartstocht naar wereldheerschappij. Divus Augustus! met als eeredienst het Caesarisme. Een diepzondige gedachte, eerst achttien eeuwen later in Hegels stelsel, van den Staat als „den gegenwärtigen Gott," ontleed ook voor het denkend bewustzijn. Daarentegen, „niet zoover doenlijk, maar in volstrekten zin ongedeeld en ongebroken die Souvereiniteit overgedragen!" laat Jehovah onder Israël uitroepen door de tolken der Messiaansche profetie. En die mensch-Messias trad op, met macht in den hemel; met macht over de natuur; met pretentie van macht over alle volk te hebben; en macht, in alle volk, óók over de consciëntie, óók over het geloof; zelfs de moederband aan het kind moest wijken, waar Hij gehoorzaamheid afvroeg. Hier dus de volstrekte Souvereiniteit; gaande over álle zichtbare en onzichtbare dingen; over wat geestelijk én stoffelijk beide is; gelegd in handen van een mensch. Niet één der koninkrijken, maar het absolute Koninkrijk. „Om Koning te zijn, daartoe ben ik geboren en daartoe ben ik in de wereld gekomen." „Alle macht in den hemel en op gansch de aarde is mijn." „Eens wordt alle vijand mij onderworpen, en buigt voor mij zich alle knie!" Ziedaar de Souvereiniteit van den Messias, die de profeet eens aanzeî; waarop de Nazarener aanspraak maakte; die hij, wonderen doende, in aanvang betoonde; die door zijn apostelen omschreven is, en die de gemeente van dien Christus, op hún gezag, belijdt, als ongedeeld, maar nochtans overgedragen; of liever, overgenomen om weêr teruggegeven te worden. Want zóó niet zal ééns die volkomen harmonie doorbreken, of de Souvereiniteit gaat van Messias op God zelf terug, die dan τὰ πάντα ἐν πᾶσι, d. i. „alles in allen" zal zijn. Maar; en zie hier nu de heerlijke Vrijheidsgedachte! in die volstrekte Souvereiniteit van den onzondigen Messias ligt tegelijk de rechtstreeksche ontkenning en betwisting van alle absolute Souvereiniteit op aarde in een zondigen mensch; en dat wel door de deeling van het leven in eigen kringen, elk met eigen Souvereiniteit voor zich. Ons menschelijk leven, met zijn stoffelijken voorgrond, die zichtbaar, en zijn geestelijken achtergrond, die onzichtbaar is, blijkt noch eenvoudig noch eenvormig te zijn, maar vormt een oneindig samengesteld organisme. Zóó saâmgesteld dat het enkele niet dan groepsgewijs bestaat en eerst in die groepen zich het geheel kan openbaren. Noem nu de deelen van dit ééne groote werktuig raderen, die door eigen veeren om een eigen spil gedreven worden, of sferen, elk vervuld met een eigen spannenden levensgeest — naam of beeld is onverschillig — mits Ge maar erkent dat er, zoo talloos als de starrenbeelden aan het firmament, allerlei kringen in het leven bestaan, wier omtrek, van uit een eigen beginsel als middenpunt, getrokken is met vasten straal; het apostolische ἕκαστος ἐν τῷ ἰδίῳ τάγματι! Gelijk men spreekt van een „zedelijke wereld," een „wetenschappelijke wereld," een „handelswereld," een „kunstwereld," zoo spreekt men juister nog van „een kring" des zedelijken, „een kring" des huiselijken, „een kring" des maatschappelijken levens, elk met een eigen gebied, en omdat ze een eigen gebied vormen, met binnen den omtrek van dat gebied een eigen Souverein. Zoo is er een gebied der natuur, waarin de Souverein op stof door kracht werkt naar vaste wet. Maar zoo ook een gebied des persoonlijken, des huiselijken, des wetenschappelijken, des maatschappelijken en des kerkelijken levens, die aan een eigen levenswet gehoorzamen en alle staan onder eigen overhoogheid. Een gebied des denkens, waarop geen andere wet dan die der logica mág heerschen. Een gebied van de consciëntie, waarop niemand souverein te gebieden heeft dan de Heilige zelf. Een gebied eindelijk des geloofs, binnen welks omtrek alleen de persoon zelf Souverein is, die in het diepst zijns wezens door dat geloof zich wijdt. Al deze kringen nu grijpen met de tanden hunner raderen in elkaâr, en juist door dat „op elkaâr werken" en „in elkaâr schuiven" van deze kringen ontstaat het rijke, veelzijdige, veelvormige menschenleven; maar ontstaat óók, in dat leven, het gevaar dat de ééne kring den naastliggenden inbuige; aldus een rad horten doe; tand na tand stuk wringe; en dusdoende den gang store van het geheel. En vandaar dus de bestaansreden voor het optreden in het Staatsgezag van nog een afzonderlijken gezagskring, die voor het leven dezer velerlei kringen, in zoover ze uittreden naar het zichtbare, goede op-elkaâr-werking heeft mogelijk te maken en ze heeft te houden binnen de palen van het recht; en die evenzoo, overmits het persoonlijk leven door de groep, waarin men leeft, gedrukt kan worden, den eenling heeft te beschutten tegen overheersching van zijn kring. Een Souverein, die, naar de Schrift het zoo kernachtig uitdrukt, „het land door recht staande houdt", overmits het zonder recht zichzelf vernielt en valt. Hoog steekt dus deze Staatssouvereiniteit, als de macht die den enkele beschermt en de onderlinge rechtsverhouding der zichtbare levenskringen bepaalt, door recht tot bevelen en door recht tot dwangoefening, boven deze alle uit; maar binnen in elk dier kringen geldt ze niet; dáár heerscht een ander gezag, dat, buiten haar om, uit God nederdaalt, en door haar niet verleend wordt, maar erkend. En zelfs voor de rechtsbepaling van de onderlinge verhouding dezer kringen mag deze Staatssouverein niet eigen wil of keus ten richtsnoer kiezen, maar is hij gebonden aan de keus van Hooger wil, gelijk die uit den aard en het bestaansdoel dezer kringen spreekt. Zóó als de raderen bestemd zijn te loopen, zóó moet hij ze doen loopen. Niet het leven te beklemmen noch de vrijheid te binden, maar vrije levensbeweging voor en in elk dier kringen mogelijk te maken, is het niet voor elk edeler Staatssouverein het hem wenkend ideaal? Scherp staan dus beide credo's tegen elkaâr over. Wie leeft uit de Openbaringssfeer (en in die sfeer consequent leeft), belijdt vanzelf, dat alle Souvereiniteit in God rust en dus alleen uit Hem kan vloeien; dat die Souvereiniteit Gods in volstrekten zin en ongedeeld op den mensch-Messias is gelegd; en dat, onder dezen tot Souverein gezalfden Menschenzoon, dáárom 's menschen vrijheid veilig is, omdat, met den Staat, óók elk ander levensgebied een uit Hem afgeleide hoogheid kent, d. i. Souvereiniteit bezit in eigen kring. Zij daarentegen, die het bestaan van zulk een bijzondere openbaringssfeer niet speuren, en dus loochenen, staan er op, dat men de Souvereiniteitsquaestie absoluut van de geloofsquaestie scheide; beweren diensvolgens dat er geen andere Souvereiniteit dan die van den Staat denkbaar is; ijveren er dies voor dat de hooge Souvereiniteitsidée steeds zuiverder in den oppermachtigen Staat tot belichaming kome; en kunnen dienovereenkomstig aan de overige levenskringen geen mildere vrijheid gunnen dan zóóveel recht, als de Staat hun laat uit onmacht, of uit zijn volmacht verleent. Credo's over de Souvereiniteit noemde ik deze uitspraken, levensovertuigingen; geen stelsels. Omdat de klove die ze scheidt niet in een ánders schikken der gedachten, maar in een erkennen of ontkennen van levensfeiten ligt. Voor ons, die uit de Openbaring leven, leeft die Messias, werkt die Christus, en zit hij als Souverein veel wezenlijker op den troon der kracht Gods, dan Gij daar nederzit op de zerken van dit koorgraf. Terwijl omgekeerd, wie dit niet belijdt, het wel moet bestrijden, als een hinderlijk zelfbedrog, dat in den weg staat aan 's volks ontwikkeling; heilloos dogma; droombeeld zonder zin! Lijnrecht tegen elkaâr indruischende confessiën alzoo, die door onmanlijke halfheid wel keer op keer zijn weggeschoven achter een breede reeks van hybridische stelsels; gemengd uit meer van het een en min van het ander, of ook uit evenveel van elk; maar die, als de principiëele credo's, waaraan toch ook deze vaalheden heur grondtint ontleenden, bij ernstiger tijdsgewricht, altijd weêr in toorne door dit beginselloos spel heenbraken, om met open vizier nogmaals kamp te bieden en kamp te vragen, als de twee eenige reusachtige tegenstellingen, die het leven in den wortel doen splijten, en dies waard zijn dat men, er anderer leven om beroerend, er eigen leven voor waagt. De „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" zich tegen de „Staatssouvereiniteit" verdedigend, ziedaar dan ook het kort beloop van 's werelds historie; reeds eer de Messiaansche Souvereiniteit was uitgeroepen. Want het Koningskind van Bethlehem dekt die „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" wel met zijn schild, maar schiep ze niet. Ze bestond van ouds. Ze lag in de ordening der schepping; in het bestek van ons menschelijk leven; ze was er eer er Staatssouvereiniteit ontstond. Maar eenmaal opgekomen, heeft die Staatssouvereiniteit in die eigen Souvereiniteit der levenskringen haar bestendige belaagster vermoed, en heeft men binnen in die kringen zelf, door schending van eigen levenswet, d. i. door de zonde, zijn kracht tot weêrstand verzwakt. Zoo biedt dan de historie der oudheid ons onder alle volk het smadelijk schouwspel, hoe na volhardende, soms heldenmoedige worsteling, de vrijheid in eigen kring wegsterft en de Staatsmacht, in Caesarisme overgaande, veld wint. Socrates, die den gifbeker drinkt, Brutus, die Caesar den dolk in het hart stoot, de Galilaërs, wier bloed Pilatus met hun offerande mengt, het zijn de wild heroïeke stuiptrekkingen van een vrij organisch leven, dat ten leste onder de ijzeren hand van dat Caesarisme neêrstort. Er is als de oudheid ten einde spoedt geen vrijheid meer; er zijn geen volkeren; er zijn geen kringen meer. Het was al één kring, één wereldrijk onder éénen souvereinen Staatswil geworden. En slechts in den roes eener ontmannende weelde dronk de in smaad verzonken menschheid zich de krenking van dien smaad uit het hart. Hij, die toen door bovenaardsche, door geloofskracht, in „eenerlei" binnen dien ijzeren band, weêr een eigen vrijen kring en in dien kring vrije Souvereiniteit, inschiep, was Jezus de Nazarener. God in het hart, met God één, zelf God, weêrstond hij den Caesar; verbrak de ijzeren deuren; en poneerde de geloofssouvereiniteit, als diepste spil waar alle Souvereiniteit in eigen kring op rust. Dat er, behalve de zaligheid der uitverkorenen, ook een σωτηρία τοῦ κόσμου, een vrijmaking der wereld, een wereld van vrijheden, in zijn „Volbracht" school, begreep Farizeër noch discipel. Maar Jezus doorzag het. Vandaar het Βασιλεύς op zijn kruis. Als Souverein is hij opgetreden. Met den ingedrongen „Overste der wereld" heeft hij om de hoogheid óver die wereld, als haar Souverein, gekampt. En nauwelijks vormen zijn volgelingen een eigen kring, of zie, ook zij komen met de Staatssouvereiniteit in botsing. Ze bezwijken. Hun bloed vloeit. Maar het souverein geloofsbeginsel van Jezus is ook met hún bloed niet uit te delgen. Deus Christus of Divus Augustus! wordt het Shibbôleth dat 's werelds lot beslist. En de Christus wint, en Caesar tuimelt, en de vrijgemaakte natiën treden weêr elk met eigen koningen, en op het gebied dier koningen met eigen kringen, en in die kringen met eigen vrijheden op. En toen begon dat leven met eere pas, in riddereer zich zelf kronend, om in al rijker organisme van gilde en orde en vrije gemeenschap ál de energie en ál de glorie te toonen, die Souvereiniteit van eigen kring in zich besluit. In ons lieve vaderland sterker nog dan elders. Haast scheen het wel of het land, in eigen polderkringen ingedeeld, kloeker nog dan één, de Souvereiniteit in eigen kring tegen de Staatssouvereiniteit kon verdedigen. Dat heeft Filips ondervonden, toen de zangers van het Souterlied en de bidders der hagepreken ook op hun beurt, huns ondanks, met de Staatssouvereiniteit in botsing geraakten. Ondervonden ook in de eeuw, die daarna kwam, de Stuart en Bourbon, M. H.! toen de onsterflijke zeeheld, op wiens praalgraf we hier staren, toen onze heerlijke De Ruyter, het weêr opkomend royalisme van de Karels en Lodewijken weêrstond in alle zeeën en brak op elke kust. „Ik schipper naast God, schipper van mijn schip!" was het onuitdelgbaar vrijheidsbesef dat, met hem, heel de phalanx onzer zeehelden bezielde, en in zeemansterm immers op alle wateren de koninklijke pretentie droeg van wat in rechtsterm heet „in eigen kring Souverein!" Doch helaas, eer nog een eeuw verliep, ontviel ook onze landzaat aan zichzelf; ook Holland zonk in zonde weg; en met onze republiek bezweek het laatste hechte bolwerk, dat der vrijheid op Europa's vasteland verbleef. Zoo wies de stroom van het royalisme. Het ving aan de landen te vertreden, de volkeren te trappen, de natiën te tergen, tot eindelijk in de lichtst ontvlambare onder die natiën het vuur der wrake uitbrak, alle hartstocht opstoof, en de principieele Revolutie het gekroonde hoofd den Souverein afsloeg, om het souvereine volk te kronen. Ontzettende gebeurtenis, die uit dorst naar vrijheid, maar ook uit haat tegen den Messias, geboren, de vrijheid nog slechts enger benauwen kwam! Want de Souverein van den éénen stembusdag stelde, door die stembus, zich morgen reeds willoos onder volstrekte curateele; van de Jacobijnenclub eerst; toen van den Napoleontischen Caesar; welhaast van het schoonschijnendst Staatsideaal; in Frankrijk inderhaast met wilden greep verwerkelijkt; straks door Duitschlands philosofengroep als naar recht en „vernunftmässig" bepleit. En zoo lag wederom de vrijheid neder in haar smaad, en dreigde ten tweede male ééne enkele Souvereiniteit alle andere Souvereiniteiten op te slokken. En wat toen redde? Neen, niet de restauratiegeest van het Weener Congres. Niet de vorstenvergoding van Haller en De Maistre. Niet de historische school, die veeleer in haar physiologische opvatting alle hooger beginsel smoorde. Zelfs niet het pseudo-constitutioneele stelsel met zijn „roi fainéant" en zijn tyranniseerende partijen. Maar wel de Messias, de Souverein aan de rechterhand Gods gezeten, die onder de volkeren, door den schoonsten Réveil die ooit die volkeren wakker riep, weêr ongemerkt een geest uitzond van genâ, van gebed, van geloove. Want even daardoor ontstond vanzelf weêr een eigen kring, waarin een ander Souverein dan de aardsche macht werd aangebeden. Een kring waarin men tot op de ziel ging; barmhartigheid oefende; en „als staatsliên niet, maar als Evangeliebelijders" de staten bezielde. Niet door het politieke raderwerk, maar door zedelijke kracht, werd aldus van binnen uit de ziel een hope der natiën geboren; en niet om te heerschen, maar door te dienen, werd aldus ook in óns vaderland, het volksdeel, dat Messias huldigt, de pars Christiana, haars ondanks een nationale partij. Geen factie, d. i. een gemaakte groep; geen fractie, d. i. een afgebroken stuk; maar volkspartij, d. i. volksdeel, naar het in partes dilabi, „in deelen uiteenvallen", van wat uit die deelen bestaat; om, mocht het zijn, door dat tijdelijk deelen weêr het geheel, weêr de heerlijke volkseenheid te bezielen voor hooger ideaal. Voor dien kring trok Bilderdijk den omtrek, toen hij de Volkssouvereiniteit ontwortelde met de bijl van zijn lied; gaf Da Costa den levenstoon aan door zijn hymne voor den Souverein Messias; en schreef ten leste Groen van Prinsterer het Staatsrechtelijk credo, door zijn sprekende formule van „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring." En, krachtens dat uit God zelf neêrgedaald beginsel, is sinds nu deze dertig jaren op de knieën geworsteld, het afgedoolde nageloopen, met de „passion des âmes" geëvangeliseerd. Voor dát beginsel is stichting na stichting, als woonstede der barmhartigheid, onze erve komen sieren. Voor dát beginsel is smaad geleden, rust verzaakt, goud op het altaar gedragen. Er is voor geijverd onder het volk; voor gesmeekt bij den troon; voor gepleit in de raadzaal. „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring, ónder Jezus' souvereine hoogheid!" hield, wat anders broederen deelde, deez' broederkring bijeen. Vandaar een rustelooze inspanning, die onze kleene kracht door oefening staalde; een roeien tegen den stroom op, dat onzen moed door prikkeling verhoogde; een pressa uberior, waardoor de ingedrukte veer onveranderlijk terugsprong. En aldus een allengs in spontaneiteit uitgroeien boven landgenooten, aan wier meerderheid op zoo menig ander gebied we met zelfbeschaming hulde doen. Zoo streden we om de ondeelbaarheid van het souverein gezag. Voor de Staten-Generaal als naast en bij; niet in noch onder; de Overheid staande. Zoo handhaafden we niet een afschrikkingstheorie, maar Godes souvereine wrake bij hem, die 's menschen bloed vergieten dorst. Zoo ging ons protest uit tegen het met dwang aan het lijf van onze kinderen komen met het beëtterd lancet. Zoo profeteerden we van vrijmaking der Kerk. En zoo concentreerde zich ten leste geheel onze strijd in den strijd om de volksschool, toen in die school én de Souvereiniteit der consciëntie én de Souvereiniteit van den huislijken, én de Souvereiniteit van den paedagogischen, én de Souvereiniteit van den geestelijken kring, gelijkelijk werd bedreigd. En overmits nu een beginsel, zaad zaaiende naar zijn aard, niet kan rusten, eer het in wetenschappelijk geordenden samenhang ál zijn kiemen ontluiken deed; en een volksdeel, voor zulk een beginsel opkomend, niet mag aflaten, eer het uit den wortel des geloofs ook de vrucht der wetenschap wist te telen; en zulk een concentrische wetenschap niet anders is te kweeken dan in een school van Universitairen aanleg; — zoo moest het wel komen; met ijzeren consequentie, door innerlijken levensdrang komen; tot wat heden feit wierd; t. w. tot een van stapel loopen van dit wel klein en onzeewaardig scheepke, maar dat, onder de Souvereiniteit van Koning Jezus gecharterd, toch aan alle haven der wetenschap de vlag wil gaan toonen van „in eigen kring Souverein!" II. „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" zou U voorts de signatuur zijn óók van ons wetenschappelijk bedoelen. — Ook dit vat ik practisch op. Geen afgetrokken schoolsche dorheden, maar beginselvastheid, diepte van inzicht, helderheid van oordeel, i. é. w. geheiligde denkkracht, als weêrstandsmacht tegen wat door overmacht de vrijheid beperken wil in en van ons menschelijk leven. Vergeet niet, op de vrijheid met een wantrouwend oog neêr te zien, ligt in de neiging van élke Staatsmacht. De verschillende levenskringen kunnen den Staatskring niet missen, want zoomin ruimte ruimte begrenzen kan, begrenst de ééne kring in het zichtbare den anderen, tenzij de Staat hun grens in rechten bepaalt. De Staat is dies de kring der kringen, die alleen onder alle extensief geheel ons menschelijk leven omsluit; en die derhalve in edeler zin (niet voor zichzelf, maar in aller kringen belang) op sterking van zijn arm bedacht, alsnu, met dien gesterkten arm, elk streven dier kringen naar uitzetting en dus naar ruimer erf weêrstaat en poogt te breken. Ook nu weêr. Merk slechts op de teekenen der tijden. Of heeft niet nog Mommsen zelfs, onder het kloeke beeld dat hij van Caesar maalde, het terugkeeren naar de imperialistische lijn, eens door dien Caesar getrokken, aangeduid als richtsnoer voor de staatsmanswijsheid onzer eeuw? Is Duitschlands kanselier u dan een vrijheidlievende gestalte? Was het soms de man, die bij Sedan zoo onuitsprekelijk diep door dien kanselier vernederd werd? Vrijheidlievend of dwingziek, wat is de indruk op u door den volkstribuun gemaakt, die in Frankrijks hoofdstad dien man van Sedan thans aan volksinvloed heeft vervangen? En dat moest zoo, als tucht- en geneesmiddel beî voor de laffe en ontmande natiën, die door de atrophie van heur zedelijke veerkracht, dit inbuigen van heur vrijheid mogelijk maakten. De Staat is nu eenmaal de oppermachtige op aarde. Er is geen aardsche macht boven den Staat, die den Souverein tot het doen van recht kan dwingen, en, hetzij dus uit onedele heerschzucht, hetzij uit edele zorg voor het algemeen belang, zal élke Staat er van nature toe komen, om den ijzeren band zoo vast om de duigen te drijven, als de krimp dier duigen slechts even gedoogt. Zoo hangt het ten slotte dus van die levenskringen zelven af, of ze in vrijheid bloeien of onder Staatsdwang zuchten zullen. Bezitten ze zedelijke spankracht, dan zijn ze niet in te duwen, dan laten ze zich niet inkrommen; terwijl serviliteit, als ze in de slavenboei gewrongen wordt, zelfs het recht mist tot klacht. Maar hier juist schuilt het zeer; de vrijheid wordt minstens even sterk binnen in elken kring door de zonde, als op de grens van dien kring door de Staatsmacht bedreigd. Als men om duigen den band wil drijven, steekt men immers vuur in den duigenromp aan, en meer nog dan de hamerslag doet dat vuur van binnen ze krimpen. En zoo ook is het met onze vrijheden. Er smeult, er walmt in de kern van élken levenskring een gloed van hartstocht, waar de spranken der zonde uit opspringen, en die onheilige brand, dat onzalige vuur ondermijnt de zedelijke levenskracht, verzwakt in elken kring het spanvermogen, en doet in 't eind de hardste duigen buigen. Bij elken welgelukten aanslag op de vrijheid kan dus de Staat nooit dan medeplichtige zijn, hoofdschuldige blijft de plichtvergeten burger zelf, die, in zonde en zingenot zijn zedelijke spierkracht verslappend, de kracht tot eigen initiatief verloor. Onder een volk dat, gezond in zijn nationale kern, nog gezond in zijn kringen leeft, kan geen Staat de palen van het recht verzetten, of dat volk verzet er zich door zedelijken weêrstand, met Gods hulpe, tegen in. Eerst als de tucht week en de weelde insloop en de zonde schaamteloosheid wierd, kon de theorie buigen wat verslapt, een Napoleon intrappen wat vermolmd was. En indien dan ook, meê door den druk, niet telkens weêr uit God in die ontzielde levenskringen veerkracht indaalde om, naar het woord der jongste wijsbegeerte, uit atomen dynamiden te maken, zou reeds lang de laatste eigen kring doorbroken zijn en van de vrijheid ons niets resten dan het „sic transit" op haar graf. Onder de verweermiddelen nu, die God aan edeler volkeren schonk, om hun vrijheden te handhaven, is óók de wetenschap; staat meê de wetenschap vooraan. De man van Tarsen was onder de tolken des Heiligen Geestes de wetenschappelijk gevormde, en immers niet uit den peinzenden Johannes, noch uit den practischen Jacobus, maar uit den Paulinischen geestesschat greep Luther de vrijheid der Hervorming. Wel weet ik, dat ook zij de vrijheid verraden kon en meer dan eens verraden heeft, maar dit was ondanks, niet krachtens haar heilige missie. In haar echte gestalte genomen, zond God ze ons als een engel des lichts. Want wat den waanzinnige, wat den idioot, wat den dronkaard zijn menschelijk aanzien rooft, is dat niet juist het ontbreken van helder bewustzijn? En tot helder bewustzijn nu te komen, niet van zichzelf alleen, maar ook van wat buiten ons zelf bestaat, is dát niet de wetenschap? Het Gode nádenken van wat Hij vóór en óver en in ons heeft gedacht? Het zijns- en levensbewustzijn niet van een enkel persoon, maar van de alle eeuwen omvattende menschheid! Hetgeen is, in te kunnen denken, en het aldus in ons bewustzijn gespiegelde te kunnen saâmvatten in onze rede, is een eerebeschikking van God over ons menschelijk wezen. Wijsheid te bezitten, is in ons wezen een goddelijke trek. Ja, zóó ver strekt zelfs de macht van wijsheid en van wetenschap, dat der dingen loop meest gaat, niet naar wat de werkelijkheid is, maar naar wat de mensch zich die werkelijkheid voorstelt. Wat zegt men dat begrippen onverschillig zijn? Die begrippen vormen de publieke meening; die meening het rechtsbesef; en naar dat besef is, ontdooit of stolt de stroom van het geestelijk leven. Vandaar dat wie invloed voor zijn beginselen beoogt, niet kan blijven zweven in het gevoel; niets vordert met verbeelding; zelfs met zijn belijden slechts halverwege komt; en dán eerst klem op het publiek verkrijgt, als hij tot macht óók in de denkwereld geraakte, en hij den drang die hem inwendig dreef, den „Deus in nobis," óók wist over te leiden uit wat hij beseft, naar wat hij weet. Mits, en daar houd ik streng aan vast, mits ook die wetenschap „Souverein in eigen kring" blijve, en noch onder Staatsvoogdij noch onder kerkelijke curateele verbastere van haar aard. Ook de wetenschap vormt een eigen levenskring, waarin de waarheid Souverein is, en onder geen omstandigheden schending of verkrachting van haar levenswet mag geduld. Dat te doen zou niet slechts de wetenschap onteeren, maar zonde voor God zijn. Ons bewustzijn is als een spiegel in ons, waarin beelden gekaatst worden uit drie werelden: uit de wereld om ons heen, uit de wereld van ons eigen wezen, en uit de onzichtbare wereld der geesten. En eisch der rede is het nu: 1°. elk dier werelden die beelden naar heur eigen aard te laten afspiegelen, of de αἴσθησις, d. i. waarneming én gewaarwording; 2°. het afgespiegelde met een zuiver oog op te vangen, of de νόησις, d. i. het bezien van die beelden tot we ze verstaan; en 3°. het aldus opgevangene harmonisch saâm te vatten, of de γνῶσις, d. i. dit geziene te doorzien in zijn samenhang, als noodzakelijk en schoon. Geen bespiegeling dus, maar afspiegeling in ons. Wetenschap die wijs maakt. Uit het leven voor het leven. Eindigende in aanbidding van den alleenwijzen God! Die Souvereiniteit der wetenschap in eigen kring heeft Spinoza gevat, en dies eert onze bewondering Spinoza's karakter even hoog als het den laffen Erasmus naar zedelijken maatstaf laag stelt. Het orgaan en dus de gewaarwording was bij Spinoza onzuiver en dus moest zijn slotsom wel leugen wezen. Maar dat hij, ziende wat en zooals hij het zag, standvastig heeft geweigerd zich tot schending van de Souvereiniteit der wetenschap in eigen kring te leenen, dat laakt een goed-gereformeerde niet, maar stelt hij verre boven het aarzelend onvaste, waardoor meer dan één, die kent wat nooit Spinoza kende, tot beginselloos vergelijk wierd verleid. Met hand en tand moet, mede daárom, vastgehouden, dat nooit de Kerk van Christus haar overhoogheid aan de wetenschap mag opdringen. Op het zeer wezenlijk gevaar af, dat ze van de wetenschap schade lijde, moet de kerk veeleer zelve er op aandringen, dat de wetenschap, zonder ooit slavinne te worden, de haar toekomende Souvereiniteit op eigen erf handhave en leve bij de gratie Gods. Want wel dreigt hiermeê het satanisch gevaar, dat er zijn die in duivelen van hoogmoed ontaarden en de wetenschap tot aanmatiging van wat haars niet is verleiden. Maar vooreerst is een hooge torenspitse nu eenmaal nimmer te bestijgen zonder dat gevaar voor diepen val vlak er naast ligge; en ten andere geldt hier van de tyrannie der wetenschap wat ons zoo straks van de tyrannie van den Staat bleek: ze kan niet opkomen tenzij de kerk eerst geestelijk inzonk; en óók, door weêr geestelijk op te waken, dringt de kerk vanzelf de wetenschap, die in Godes naam haar tuchtigen kwam, weêr binnen juister palen terug. Niet geheel, maar toch bijna hetzelfde is te zeggen van den Staat. Niet geheel, want de Staat blijft ook voor den kring der wetenschap, zoodra die zich in scholen een zichtbaar organisme vormt, de ἐξουσία διατακτική, die macht ontving om haar rechtssfeer te bepalen. Slechts ontbinde ook die Staatsmacht, eer ze, óver die grens ooit tot op het erf der wetenschap mocht doordringen, eerbiedig den schoenriem van haar voet en legge af een souvereiniteit, die haar op dat terrein niet zou voegen. Een wetenschap als Staatsdienaresse, gelijk de Ghibellijnen die tegen de Welfen uitspeelden; Frankrijks bureaucratie ter volksbeheersching misbruikte; en Duitsche reactie zich in Göttingens smaad te scheppen zocht; is de geprostitueerde zelfverlaging, die elke steekhoudende aanspraak op zedelijken invloed verbeurt. Maar ook al bezielt den Staat, gelijk in onze gezagskringen, edeler inborst, en ook al is, gelijk ten onzent, de wetenschap te fier, om van bukken te weten; toch zal het der wetenschap ook op onze erve ten zegen gedijen en strekken tot eer, indien ze, óók in haar Universiteitsleven, weêr stoelen gaat op eigen wortel en, ingroeiend in een eigen leven, aldus de Staatsvoogdij ontwast. Zoo, vrij in het midden des volks, stonden eens de profetenscholen in Israël en de scholen der Chokma te Jeruzalem. Zoo vrij traden eens de scholen der oudste wijsgeeren in Griekenland en van hun nabootsers te Rome op. Zoo vrij vertoonden zich eens de scholen der eerste Christengeleerden. En even vrij de aloude Universiteiten van Bologna en Parijs. Niet als het vormen van een kader van Staat, om er voorts wetenschap in te gieten; maar wetenschap die in het leven optrad en in dat leven zich een vorm schiep. Het was in dien vrijen vorm dat meê de Universiteit aan de vrijmaking der Reformatie kon arbeiden, en niet voor in het laatst der vorige eeuw wist men dat vrije kader in een „tak van Staatsdienst" om te tooveren, toen de nieuwmodische Universiteit zich als orgaan liet vastschroeven aan den Staat. Daartoe kwam het, niet uit persoonlijke willekeur, maar door den drang der gebeurtenissen; door de ontzenuwing der volkeren; en aan ongerijmdheid zou de eisch grenzen, dat thans opeens de Staat zijn hand uit de Universiteitswereld terugtrok. Er is thans te weinig zin voor wetenschap bij de menigte; te weinig mildheid bij de rijken der aarde; te weinig wilsenergie in gegradueerde kringen, om het daarop te wagen. Voorshands moet de Staat wel blijven steunen; mits, en hier staan we op, mits het streven slechts in de richting naar vrijmaking ga, en „de Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" ook door de wetenschap weêr als haar ideaal worde gegrepen. Is het dan onwetenschappelijk, dat in die betere richting thans door onze School een eerste schuchtere schrede worde gewaagd? Op de Rijksuniversiteit drukken in de weegschaal der billijkheden zoo tal van bezwaren. Geld, het kan niet genoeg herhaald, schept een macht voor wie het geeft en een macht over hem die het ontvangt. Vandaar dat de kunst (die van het lied uitgenomen) omdat ze goud behoeft, de volksvrijheid nooit duurzaam kon verheffen. Wie meet den invloed, dien door dat Staatsgeld één enkele benoeming als van Thorbecke, van Scholten of van Opzoomer op 's lands lot en den gang der wetenschappen geoefend heeft? Waar is de geestelijke maatstaf, die den Staat voor de hoogere, meest beslissende wetenschappen bij zoo invloedrijke keuze leiden kan? Bovendien, den Jood en den Roomsche bij dwangbevel tot meêbetaling te dwingen aan een godgeleerde faculteit, die feitelijk een Protestantsche is en moest worden, is er voor het rechtsbesef toch niet iets in dat niet bevredigt? En als dan de Rijkswet ons recht op eigen stichting erkent, en de Souverein van dit land, gelijk straks vernomen wierd, onze vrije, niet door deze bezwaren gedrukte, instelling in de rechtssfeer opnam, ligt er dan in een door het volk zelf gedragene Universitaire stichting niet voor wetenschap én volksleven een schoone profetie? Immers hier is dan nu een groep, van die men „nachtschool" schold voor nog geen dertig jaren, en die thans hun krachten uitputten voor een wetenschappelijk doel! De minst geachten uit het „niet-denkend" deel der natie, die van den ploeg en van den meeltrog komen aanloopen, om de penningen saâm te brengen voor een te stichten Universiteit. Elders ijvert men voor vooruitgang van boven, men wil de wetenschap naar het volk toe brengen. Maar is hier niet nog iets meer, in een volksgroep die, opdat de wetenschap bloeie, zich bekrimpt in haar genot? Is er voor het probleem om de wetenschap met het levensorganisme te verbinden practischer oplossing? Moet er geen samengroeien met het volk en warsheid van wat dor en afgetrokken is, komen in mannen der wetenschap, die van dit volksgeld leven? En behalve dat, is geven niet reeds op zichzelf een kracht; van geld afstand doen vormt het niet een zedelijk vermogen; en wie schat dan het zedelijk kapitaal, dat juist door deze kostbare Stichting aan ons volk ten goede komt? Over karakterschaarschte klaagt men, maar waardoor meer dan door zulk een vrij initiatief van wakkere burgers zullen karakters gevormd worden? En loopt dan elders het Universitaire rad o zoo geleidelijk door de dwingmacht der ontvangeren en de grifheid der betaalmeesteren, ook dat benijden we niet; want, is het bij ons „the struggle for life," juist in dien strijd vormt zich de kracht der heerlijkste toewijding. Er schuilt in het ons toebetrouwde geld nog een andere, nog een hoogere dan de weegbare metaalwaarde: er kleeft gebed, er kleeft liefde, er kleeft zweet van het aangezichte aan het óns toevloeiend goud. III. Zoo bleek ons dan, hoe „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" het streven is waaruit onze Stichting werd geboren; zoo wierd dan onverholen uitgesproken, dat „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring," ook ons als koninklijk beding voor alle wetenschap geldt, die zal bloeien; en heb ik alzoo nu nog slechts den ons bestreden eisch te bepleiten, dat men die „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" óók aan ons beginsel gunne, ik bedoel aan ons beginsel van Gereformeerd. Bij het noemen van dien naam snijd ik echter onverwijld een telkens weêr gerezen misverstand af, en werp van ons elk vermoeden, als zou van onzen kant met „Gereformeerd" ooit iets anders of iets minder bedoeld zijn, dan het echte, zuivere Christendom. Gelijk de koopman van netto gewicht, de munter van fijn goud, de zilversmid van groote keur, de Schrift van onvervalschten nardus spreekt en zeker blad aan het Spaarne zichzelf als „de oprechte" betitelt, zoo zouden ook wij, wilden we den zonderlinge spelen, van „netto" Christendom, van een „fijn" Christendom, van „onvervalscht" Christendom, van het „echte" Christendom, niet onjuist van een Christendom met „groote keur" kunnen spreken; maar, ons spenend aan zoo vreemde termen, spreken we liefst, naar taalgebruik en naar historie-eischen, van Gereformeerd; om daardoor én den namaak, én het vervalschte, én het min goed gegroeide scherp te onderscheiden van het Christendom dat is naar den Woorde Gods. Van enkel „Christelijk" te spreken zegt niets. Want dat kan óók nog „Roomsch" zijn. Ook „Remonstrantsch" wezen. Den „Christelijken naam" liet nog geen enkel moderne varen. Is het zelfs niet gezien, dat mannen, wier loochening van Gods bestaan hun een eere schijnt, in volle Staten-Generaal de valsche vlag van „Christelijk" uithingen aan den gevel eener ontkerstende school? Er moet dus wel iets bij. Aan de spraakverwarring is tot geen minderen prijs te ontkomen. En overmits nu ook op geestelijk gebied de Souvereiniteit in eigen kring geldt, en dus niet het individu namen voor beginselen en voor die beginselen omschrijvingen heeft te maken, maar dit recht alleen toekomt aan het gezaghebbend orgaan, dat in dien kring drager van het historisch leven is, zoo stond het niet aan óns een anderen naam te kiezen, noch kwam het óns toe, ons beginsel willekeurig te belijden; maar hadden we eenvoudig uit te komen met den „Gereformeerden naam," dien we, als zonen der Nederlandsche Reformatie historisch droegen; en onder dien naam te begrijpen, niet wat óns geviel, maar wat der kerke wettig oordeel was; weêr moedig en zonder beding ons bekennend tot de leerregelen van Dordt. We verwerpen daarom onze Luthersche broederen niet. Laag op andere Christenen neêr te zien, zou ons tot schuld zijn. Slechts zóóveel vragen we, dat men óns niet dwinge, wat fijner in ons oog is voor iets minder fijns uit te ruilen, en ons toesta aan den in puin gevallen Gereformeerden tempel weêr te bouwen naar onvermengd Gereformeerden stijl. Ook in deze rede streefde ik daarnaar en drong mitsdien, naar de Schrift het eischt en Calvijn er ons in voorging, de Souvereiniteit Gods op den voorgrond, omdat zij alleen het leven tot in den wortel prikkelt, en alle vrees voor menschen, de vrees voor Satan zelf, overkomt. En mocht iemand vragen, of ook „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" wel uit het hart der Schrift en uit den schat van het Gereformeerde leven gegrepen is, dien wil ik gebeden hebben, allereerst het organisch geloofsbeginsel der Schrift in zijn diepte te peilen; en voorts op het Hebronsche stammenedict voor Davids kroning te letten; te merken op Elia's weêrstand tegen Achabs dwingelandij; op der discipelen weigering om voor de politieverordening van Jeruzalem te zwichten; en niet het minst de muntspreuk van hetgeen Godes en des Keizers is te beluisteren van de lippen van hun Heer. En komt ge op het Gereformeerde leven, kent ge dan Calvijns „magistratus inferiores" niet? Ligt de Souvereiniteit in eigen kring dan niet aan geheel de presbyteriale kerkorde ten grondslag? Neigden niet schier alle Gereformeerde landen naar confederatieve bestaanswijs? Zijn de burgervrijheden niet juist onder Gereformeerde natiën het weligst ontloken? En valt er weêrspreken aan, dat de huisvrede, de decentralisatie, en de autonomie ook voor de burgerlijke gemeente, zelfs nu nog het best zijn gewaarborgd op het erf der issus de Calvin? Geheel in Gereformeerden geest is het dus, als we nu ook voor het ons eigen beginsel Souvereiniteit vragen in eigen wetenschappelijken kring. Op verdrag van neutraliteit met de wetenschap die uit een ander beginsel leeft, aan een zelfden Universitairen disch aan te zitten, mogen we niet. Want al ontken ik niet, dat er ook voor de niet-Christelijke overheid een vreezen van den hoogen God en van zijn recht bestaat, dat Calvijn zelfs bij heidensche tyrannen eerde, toch is zulk een godvruchtige grondtrek nog niets dan het fundament met hoogstens een stuk muur er op, maar zonder dak of vensters. Of wilt ge, in juister beeld nog, wat hebt ge, zoo vraag ik dan, aan een opgetrokken torengevaarte, maar waaraan de spits en dus én klokkenspel én uurwerk én weêrhaan, kortom alles waaróm hij gebouwd werd, ontbreekt. Eer aannemelijk ware dan nog die andere voorslag, van ééne groote Rijks-academie, waaraan de overheid niets dan gehoorzalen met catheders en voorts musea en laboratoria zou leveren, met recht voor elk geleerde om er op te treden en recht voor elken kring om er geleerden te plaatsen. Een wetenschappelijk Centraalstation, waar alle lijnen in zouden saâmloopen, maar elk met heur eigen richting en heur eigen beheer. Maar toch ook zoo nog zou het koninklijke recht van elk beginsel op „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" van beider zij geschonden worden. Of leert ook de historie niet, dat de wetenschap in elken levenskring met een eigen beginsel een gansch andere gestalte verkreeg? Er is immers een Grieksche, er is een Arabische, er is een Scholastieke wetenschap geweest, die óns wel niet toespreekt, maar in den eigen kring niettemin doorleefd en doorgedacht is door reusachtige denkers, in wier schaduw geen onzer te plaatsen viel. Evenzoo ná de middeneeuwen vertoont de wetenschap een licht onderscheidbaar gelaat aan Roomsche en aan niet-Roomsche Universiteiten. De reeks van wijsgeeren, die met en na Kant optraden, vormden, naar gelang ze in het subject of in het object rustten, scholen van wetenschap, die elkaar onderling uitsloten. Den monist en atomist hoe huwt ge ze saâm? Ja, zoo dwingend en overheerschend is de kracht van een beginsel, dat Hegels denkkracht, naar aller erkentenis, én op godgeleerd én op juridisch én op physisch, ja, op élk terrein, een geheel eigen stelsel wist voort te brengen, zoodat strafrecht in Hegels en burgerlijk recht in Herbarts school te leeren noodwendig alle rechtsbesef verwart. En blijkt deze onmogelijkheid om saâm te weven aan eenzelfde kleed reeds bij verschil van denkbeginsel, hoeveel sterker treedt dan bij een levensbeginsel de noodwendigheid van eigen Souvereiniteit niet in het licht? Gelijk Fichtes voorbeeld toonde, blijft voor zoover slechts een denkbeginsel in het spel is, een weêropzoeken van het eerst verworpene nog steeds mogelijk. Maar met een levensbeginsel kan dat niet. Dat wortelt in feiten. Of sterker nog gelijk het Christelijk beginsel in een levenden persoon. In een persoon wiens optreden het poneeren van een crisis in het midden der wereld, in het middenpunt der wereldhistorie, in het centrum ook van 's werelds denken was. Want ondervraag nu dien levenden persoon, dien Christus, ondervraag zijn met autoriteit bekleede tolken slechts, en wat verneemt ge? Verklaart die Rabbi van Nazareth, dat zijn wetenschap zich huwt aan die der aardsche wijzen? Zeggen zijn apostelen u, dat doorstudeeren te Jeruzalem of te Athene u allengs en vanzelf tot zijn hooger weten brengen zal? Maar immers, vlak omgekeerd, prent die Rabbi het u in, dat zijn schat van wijsheid voor de wijzen en verstandigen verborgen is en eer den kinderkens geopenbaard. En de wetenschappelijk gevormde Paulus trekt tusschen zijn vroeger aangeleerde wetenschap en het nu hem ingeplante levensbeginsel een klove zoo breed, zoo diep, zoo onoverschrijdbaar, dat hij over en weêr als dwaasheid en als wijsheid den gedachtenkring van het ééne met den levenskring van het andere beginsel bestrijdt. Zullen wij dan voorgeven wél saâm te kunnen telen op eenzelfden wortel, wat naar de stellige uitspraak van Jezus' goddelijk zelfbewustzijn op geheel verschillenden wortel stoelt? We zullen er ons niet aan wagen, M. H.! maar, overwegende, dat met een beginsel iets begint, en dus uit een eigen beginsel iets eigens een aanvang neemt, zullen we voor óns beginsel en voor dat van onze bestrijders een eigen souvereiniteit handhaven, in geheel de sfeer van het denken. D. w. z. gelijk zij uit hún beginsel, naar de bij hún beginsel passende methode, een huis der wetenschappen optrekken, dat schittert ook al verlokt het ons niet, — zoo zullen ook wij uit óns beginsel, overeenkomstig de methode die bij óns beginsel voegt, een eigen stam laten opschieten, wiens tak en blad en bloesem uit het eigen mergsap zijn geteeld. Wij beweren nu eenmaal iets gewaar te worden, iets waar te nemen, wat men aan de overzij voor zelfbedrog verklaart. Het zij zoo, deswege voor dwazen te gelden is ons even noodzakelijk, als wij niet kunnen nalaten het den Spreukendichter na te zeggen, „dat de goddelooze ook in onze dagen geen wetenschap verstaat." Niet als zou hij onze mindere in kennis zijn. Licht is hij onze meerdere. Maar omdat hij zegt geen feit te zijn, wat voor ons als feit in Christus vast staat; en zoo ook verklaart, niet in zijn ziel gevonden te hebben, wat het bewustzijn in ónze ziel greep. Het geloof aan den Woorde Gods, objectief onfeilbaar in de Schrift en subjectief ons door den Heiligen Geest geboden, ziedaar dan wat de scheidingslijn trekt. Niet alsof anderer weten op verstandszekerheid en het onze slechts op geloof zou rusten. Van geloof, welk dan ook, gaat toch álle wetenschap uit. Ge steunt op God, ge gaat uit van uw ik, of houdt u vast aan uw ideaal. De mensch die niets gelooft, bestaat niet. Althans wie niets had, dat onmiddellijk voor hem vast stond, kón geen aanvang zelfs voor zijn denken vinden; en hoe zou de man, wiens denken elk aanvangspunt mist, ooit iets wetenschappelijk onderzoeken? Bedoeld is dus wel metterdaad een zelf bouwen naast wat anderen bouwden, zonder iets anders gemeenschappelijk dan het erf aan de deur, het uitzicht door de vensteren, met een drukpers, die als postbode de gemeenschap der gedachten onderhoudt. Want wel erkennen ook wij, dat er gedachtenstrijd, over en weêr, mogelijk en noodwendig is, maar nooit anders dan over uitgangspunt en richting. Is toch eenmaal uitgangspunt en richting bepaald, dan is, mits ge recht uw lijn trekt, de teekening van uw lijn gegeven; en naarmate ge dan links staat of rechts u bevindt, doet alles zich ánders aan u voor, en mist elk argument, dat men u tegenwerpt, voor u de kracht der overreding. Terecht drijft elk organisch denker dan ook den spot met het atomistische voorgeven, alsof elk opgroeiend persoon alle stelsels doordenken, alle belijdenissen doorzoeken moest, om voorts voor zich het beste te kiezen. Zoo iets kan niemand en doet niemand. Daar is tijd noch denkkracht beschikbaar voor. En dat hij zelf het deed of iemand het deed, kan alleen de nog onwijze van zichzelven wanen, of van anderen gelooven, wie zelf nog geen wetenschap verstaat. Dat dusgenoemd monsteren van álle stelsels voedt slechts oppervlakkigheid, verwoest het denken, bederft het karakter en maakt de hersens voor degelijker arbeid ongeschikt. Geloof mij, niet door stoep op stoep af in de gangen van alle huizen te neuzen, maar door een enkel hecht gebouwd pand tot in den nok te begluren, wint uw bouwkennis soliditeit. „Vrij" in den zin van „los van haar beginsel"! zal onze wetenschap dus niet zijn. Dat ware de vrijheid van den visch op het droge; van een bloemgewas uit zijn pot met aarde getrokken; of wilt ge van een Drentschen daglooner, losgemaakt uit zijn dorpsverband en plotseling neêrgezet in „Fleetstreet" of op 't „Strand". Wel terdege streng en onverbiddelijk binden we ons in eigen huis dus aan een vasten leefregel, overtuigd dat onder vaste huisorde het best de kracht van elk huislijk leven tiert. Immers de mildste vrijheid, op wetenschappelijk erf, is alleen daarin gelegen, dat voor wie weg wil de deur zich opene; dat geen ander in úw huis den baas kome spelen; maar ook dat ieder ander even vrij kan bouwen, op het fundament van zijn beginsel, in den stijl van de hem eigene methode, met tot kroonlijst het door hem gevonden resultaat. En vraagt ge ten slotte, of we die afzonderlijke wetenschappelijke ontwikkeling dan niet slechts voor de godgeleerdheid, maar voor álle faculteiten wenschen; ja, bedwingt ge misschien moeielijk den glimlach om de lippen, indien men van „Christelijke medicijnen" en „Christelijke logica" spot, — hoor dan ook op die bedenking ons antwoord. Of wat meent ge dan, dat we, Gods openbaring, gelijk ze na déformatie weêr gereformeerd werd, als uitgangspunt van ons streven belijdend, slechts als theologen daaruit putten zouden, maar om voorts én als artsen, én als juristen, én als philologen deze springader weêr te versmaden? Maar is er in uw oog dan wetenschap, dien naam waard, in vakkennis door loketten gescheiden? Wat spreekt men van de medische faculteit. Niet een ziek zoogdier is het toch immers, maar een mensch, geschapen naar den beelde Gods, die de medische wetenschap hygiënisch wil zegenen. En oordeel zelf dan, of ge, naar gelang men in dien mensch al dan niet een zedelijk, naar ziel én lichaam voor hooger bestemd, aan Godes Woord gebonden wezen ziet, hem den naderenden dood niet zult verzwijgen of aanzeggen; het bedwelmen van de barende vrouw niet zult aanraden of ontraden; tot vaccinatie dwingen of ze in vrije keus laten zult; zelfbedwang of inwilliging den hartstochtelijken jongeling ten plicht zult stellen; met Malthus de vruchtbaarheid der moeder vloeken of met de Schrift ze zegenen zult; of ge den zielszieke psychisch zult leiden of physisch verdooven; of ge, om niet meer te noemen, lijkverbranding goedspreekt; vivisectie onvoorwaardelijk toelaat; en het syphilitisch gif nog langer ten koste van gezagsonteering en onteering van de menschenwaarde door de verfoeilijkste aller keuringen wilt gestuit zien in de maatschappij. — Wat zal ik over de juridische faculteit spreken, alsof, naar gelang ge in den mensch een zich ontbolsterend natuurproduct of een doemschuldig zondaar; in het recht zelf een zich door functie ontwikkelend natuurorgaan of een uit God zelf neêrdalend, aan zijn Woord gebonden, kleinood; ziet, niet een ander doel zich het strafrecht, een ander richtsnoer het recht der volkeren koos. Als, reeds buiten de wetenschap om, de Christelijke consciëntie én tegen de heerschende staathuishoudkunde, én tegen de in zwang zijnde handelscostumen, én tegen het roofdierachtige der sociale verhoudingen in verzet komt; als in uw burgerrechtelijk leven al ons Christenvolk op het terugkeeren naar decentralisatie door de „Souvereiniteit in eigen kring" dringt; en in ons staatsrecht, zelfs drie voor één, afzonderlijke „Christelijke" scholen zijn opgetreden; weet ge dan nog één katheder in der juristen faculteit te noemen, die door de tegenstelling der beginselen niet wordt gedeerd? — Ik stem toe, indien onze natuurkundige faculteit zich stipt bepaalde tot meten en tot wegen, de wigge van het beginsel zou althans in haar deurpaneel niet zijn in te drijven. Maar wie doet dat? Welk natuurkundige opereert zonder hypothesen? Wie is er, die als mensch en niet als meter zijn wetenschap beoefenend, wat hij ziet, niet beziet door subjectieve glazen; en wat hij niet meer van den cirkel zien kan, niet bijstippelt naar altijd subjectieve meening? Wie den prijs u voorrekent van het bedrukte papier en het aantal druppels inkt, dat door de pers verdrukt wierd, weet die soms uw boek dat ge uitgaaft, uw vlugschrift, uw zangbundel in hooger zin te schatten? Gaat in wat strengen vloszij en een elle stramiens soms de waarde van het keurigst borduurwerk op? Of liever nog, ligt niet gansch de schepping als één verrukkend schilderstuk voor aller natuurkundigen oogen, en is met het goud van de lijst, die er om, en de ellen doeks die er onder, en de ponden verfs, die er aan zitten, dan heusch de pracht van dat kunststuk gewaardeerd! — Wat zal ik U nog van de faculteit der letteren spreken? Natuurlijk „leeren lezen" van woorden en „verbuigen" van woorden heeft met vóór of tegen Messias niets van doen. Maar als ik, verder komend, U Hellas kunstpaleis ontsluit of Romes machtwereld binnentreed, scheelt het dan niet, of ik den geest dier volkeren terugroep, om den geest van den Christus weêr uit te bannen, dan wel dien onder den geest van Christus stel, beî naar menschelijke en naar goddelijke schatting? Wordt de studie der Semitische talen geen andere, naar gelang ik in Israël het volk der absolute openbaring, of hoogstens een volk met genialiteit voor het vrome zie? Blijft de wijsbegeerte één, als ze ginds het „ideale zijn" nog najaagt, of met ons in den Christus het „vleeschgeworden" ideaal belijdt? Zal soms de wereldgeschiedenis tot eenzelfde slotsom komen, onverschillig of ze het kruis met Socrates' gifbeker vereenzelvigt of wel in het oog vat als het middenpunt áller historie? En om niet meer te noemen, zal de geschiedenis des vaderlands soms in een zelfde vuur het jongelingshart ontsteken, om het even of Fruin ze of Nuyens, dan wel Groen van Prinsterer, och, leefde hij nog! ze in haar heroïeke schoonheid ontvouwt? En hoe zou het anders, M. H.? De mensch in zijn tegenstelling van gevallen zondaar of zich ontplooiend natuurwezen, keert als het „subject dat denkt", of als het „object dat tot denken noopt", immers in élke faculteit, in élke wetenschap en bij élken onderzoeker weder. Och, geen enkel stuk van onze denkwereld is hermetisch te scheiden van de andere deelen; en geen duimbreed is er op heel 't erf van ons menschelijk leven, waarvan de Christus, die áller Souverein is, niet roept: „Mijn!" Die roepstem nu verklaren ook wij vernomen te hebben, en alleen op die roepstem ons tot dit, voor onzen arm veel te grootsche, werk te hebben opgemaakt. We hadden de tragische machteloosheid van broederen hooren klagen, die, omdat hun wetenschap niet op hun beginsel paste, met al hun wetenschap weerloos staande, hun beginsel niet bepleiten konden met een aan de eere van dat beginsel geëvenredigde kracht. We hadden de verzuchting van ons Christenvolk beluisterd, dat in de beschaming zijner zelfvernedering, weêr het bidden aanleerde om hoofden die het aanvoeren, om herderen die het weiden, om profeten die het bezielen konden. We beseften: zoo mag de eere van den Christus niet vertreden liggen blijven onder schimp en onder smaad. Zoo waarlijk we hem met de liefde onzer ziele minden, er moest in zijn naam weêr gebouwd. En toen baatte het niet, of we al op onze kleene kracht zagen, of op de overmacht van den tegenstand, of op het ongerijmde van zoo stout ondernemen. Het vuur bleef ons in de beenderen gloeien. Er was een Machtiger dan wij, die ons dreef en aanprikkelde. We konden niet rusten blijven. Onzes ondanks moesten we voort. Zelfs dat een deel onzer eigen broederen, vooralsnog elken eigen bouw ontradend, aan een blijven inwonen bij het Humanisme voorkeur schonk, was ons wel zeer pijnlijke oorzaak van stille beschaming, maar bracht dien drang van binnen slechts tot te sterker aandrijving; nu immers, bij het aarzelen zelfs van zúlke mannen, de toekomst van ons levensbeginsel nog te ernstiger bleek bedreigd. En zoo trad dan onze kleine School het leven in, met den Universiteitsnaam zelve tot blozens toe verlegen; aan geld arm; zeer sober bedeeld met wetenschappelijke kracht en aan der menschen gunst eer gespeend dan verzadigd. En wat dan nu haar loop, hoe lang haar leven zal zijn? o, De duizend vragen die met haar toekomst saâmhangen, ze kunnen zich niet sterker in Uw twijfelend denken verdringen, dan ze gestormd hebben in dit hart! Slechts door het telkens weêr zien op ons heilig beginsel, hief na elken golfslag die over ons henen sloeg, het moede hoofd zich weêr even moedig uit de wateren op. Indien toch uit den Machtige Jacobs deze zaak niet ware, hoe zou ze stand kunnen houden? Want ik overdrijf niet, het is tegen al wat groot heet, het is tegen een wereld van geleerden, het is tegen heel een eeuw, een eeuw van zoo ontzaglijke bekoring, ingaan en oproeien, wat we met de stichting dezer School bestaan. En daarom zie vrij, zoo laag uw zelfbesef meent dit te moeten doen, neder op onze personen, op onze kracht en op onze wetenschappelijke beduidenis. „God alles en alle mensch niets te achten," is het Calvinistisch credo, dat u daar volle recht op schenkt. Dit ééne slechts bid ik u, ook al waart ge onze felste wederpartijder, onthoud aan de geestdrift die ons bezielt den tol van uw eerbied niet. Want immers, die belijdenis, waar wij weêr het stof van wegvaagden, was eens de zielskreet van een vertrapte natie; die Schrift, voor wier gezag wij buigen, heeft als onfeilbaar Godsgetuige eens de bedroefden getroost in uw eigen geslachten; en die Christus wiens naam we in deze Stichting eeren, is hij niet de Bezieler, de Verkorene, de Aangebedene uwer eigen vaderen geweest? Stel dus al, dat, naar reeds in de studeercel geschreven en in de hoogovens nagezongen wierd, stel dat naar uw eigen credo, het dan wezenlijk met de Schrift uit en het Christendom een overwonnen standpunt ware, ook dan nog vraag ik: Is dan toch dat Christendom ook in uw oog, historisch, niet een te imposant, een te majestueus, een te heilig verschijnsel geweest, om smadelijk ineen te zinken en om te vallen zonder eer? Of is er dan geen Noblesse oblige meer? En mocht een banier, als we van Golgotha meêdroegen, dan ooit in 's vijands handen vallen, zoolang niet het uiterste was beproefd, nog één pijl onverschoten bleef, en er nog een lijfgarde hoe klein ook van dien door Golgotha gekroonde op deze erve leeft? Op die vraag, en hiermeê besluit ik, M. H.! op die vraag heeft een „Bij God, dat nooit!" in onze ziel weêrklonken. Uit dat „Nooit" is deze Stichting geboren. En op dat „Nooit," als eed van trouw aan hooger beginsel, vraag ik een echo, mocht het een Amen zijn, aan elk vaderlandsch hart! Nog rest mij, eer met dank aan God deze plechtigheid gesloten wordt, een eigen woord tot elk der kringen in deze aula vereenigd. Zoo zij het mij dan vergund in de eerste plaats mij tot U te wenden, Excellentie, Minister van den Koning, met beleefden dank voor de eere Uwer hooge tegenwoordigheid, en met bescheidene aanbeveling van de Stichting die geopend werd in de goede gratie van de Overheid dezes lands. In '76 schreef onze geëerbiedigde Koning in zijn wet het reeds in '48 erkende recht van zijn volk, op vrijheid ook voor hooger onderwijzen. Moge het Z. M., moge het Uwe Excellentie voldoening schenken, dat reeds vier jaren later die wet niet overtollig bleek en het volk die vrijheid gebruikt. En verklaarde de Minister des Konings, die destijds de wet verdedigde, op 11 Maart 1876: Indien Amsterdam voor haar stedelijke Universiteit het promoveerrecht cum effectu civili verkrijgt, „dan zal zich de quaestie moeten voordoen, dat ook anderen gelijke rechten eischen, en zal men redelijkerwijze hetzelfde recht hun moeten toestaan;" — zij het mij dan vergund mijn hulde aan U met de bede te besluiten, dat, indien we eens onze sporen verdienen mochten, nooit mindere billijkheid, dan in die woorden zich uitte, moge voorzitten bij de Raadslieden der Kroon. Edelachtbare Heeren Burgemeester, Wethouders en Secretaris dezer stad, ook U zij mijn eerbiedige hulde geboden. In het bijzonder U, Hoofd dezer stad! Als Burgemeester een gewezen hoogleeraar te begroeten is toch een te zeldzaam voorrecht voor den inwijder eener hoogere school, om niet het stoutste te durven hopen. Naast de niet onduur gekochte oudere, die Pallas Athene aan Uw Voorganger schonk, thans zonder prijs en zonder geld een jongere dochter bij Minerva te winnen, kan het hart van den Burgervader, zooals we U zoo gaarne noemen, niet dan welkom zijn voor Uw geliefd Amsterdam. Ons historisch Amsterdam was, meenden we, de vanzelf aangewezen stad voor zoo historische stichting. Onthoude Amsterdams dagelijksch bestuur ons dan ook verder de genegenheid niet, die het ons dusver reeds, ook door herwaarts op te komen, zoo verrassend heeft betoond. Hooggeleerde Heer, Rector Magnificus en Secretaris van de Universiteit dezer stad! Rangstrijd was van oudsher in de respublica litterarum, ik zeg niet in de faculteiten, maar toch onder de scholen, zeldzaam gekend; hoe zou ik anders als Rector dezer kleine, jongere school tot U als doorluchtig regent der oudere opzien! Ge weet het, ook in Uw Senaat weêrklonk voor jaren reeds het roepen om een „Vrije Universiteit." Zou onze Moll ooit gegist hebben, dat ze eens naast de Stedelijke Universiteit, in datzelfde Amsterdam, op den door óns gekozen grondslag zou verrijzen? En verrijzen immers zonder naijver te wekken? Och, daar zijn we te klein voor. Te meer waar Uw bedoelen meer locaal is, het onze meer voor heel het vaderland strekt. Handhave de eere der klassiek gevormden dan steeds onder ons de gewenschte verstandhouding, en blijve, ook bij het leven uit verschillend beginsel, ons de liefde voor waarheidszin, de liefde voor de wetenschap gemeen. Van de Overheid en Overheidscorporatiën wend ik mij in de tweede plaats tot de tolken van het maatschappelijk leven, in Kamer, Vereeniging en Pers. Hoogedelgestrenge Heeren, leden der Staten-Generaal, een vrucht meê van Uw onverdroten arbeid is de School die thans gesticht werd. Kloek voor onze volksvrijheden op te komen, hebt Gij, op het stuk vooral van onderwijs, nimmer verzaakt. Eer rusteloos klonk Uw manlijk woord ook voor de vrijheid der Academiën. Uw volkstribunaat bracht, steunend op het tribunaat van den Zone Gods, een keer, nu reeds merkbaar, in ons staatkundig, in ons maatschappelijk leven. Dies dankt onze Stichting U. Dies schreef ons volk Uw namen met het bloed zijns harten. Vindt hier dan, in het midden Uws volks gezeten, in de dankbare hulde die aller oog U toebrengt, voor zooveel trouw, voor zooveel toewijding, een immers ook U niet onverschillig loon! Heeren Bestuursleden van Christelijke Vereenigingen, Hooggeachte Broederen! Als met U één in het bedoelen, om de ontkerstening der natie tegen te gaan, heeft onze Stichting U op haar geboortefeest genoodigd. De beleefdheid, meer nog het liefdebetoon van Uw opkomen wordt zeer hoog door ons gewaardeerd. Niet elk onzer heeft een zelfden blik op den strijd, maar bij een zelfde kruisbanier is toch aller krijgseed aan Messias gezworen. Ons lieve vaderland, ons volk, en in dat volk den Christus Consolator, elk op eigen wijs, in nederigheid en in liefde te dienen, zij onze eerestrijd voor zijn Naam! Geachte Heeren, Vertegenwoordigers der Journalistiek. Een macht rust in Uw handen, door onze oude Academiën niet gekend, doch waar de jongere Universiteit van meet af meê wil rekenen. Ik verlaat dan ook mijn traditiën niet, zoo ik, als Groen van Prinsterers leerling, ook de pers als macht in de natie eer. Brak Groen het eerst den sleur door zelf in Uw rijen plaats te nemen, zou ik het mij dan niet tot een eere rekenen, als Uwer één met U in het gelid te zijn getreden! Aldus, als Rector dezer School, maar ook als oude wapenbroeder, vraag ik voor de jonggeboren Stichting het eeresaluut van Uw woord! En kom ik dan, in enger kring mij terugtrekkend, ten slotte tot U, die meer persoonlijk aan deze Stichting verbonden zijt, vergunt mij U dan allereerst den dank van het broederhart te bieden, Hooggeachte Heeren en Broeders, Directeuren dezer School! Ook voor wetenschap, voor wetenschap die Christus eerde, te leven, te ijveren, te offeren, was van oudsher de eer van den Amsterdamschen koopmansstand. Dien stand, nu in bond met broederen uit heel het land als gewestelijke Directeuren en gewestelijke Secretarissen, in het regiment van zulk een School te zien, troost, bezielt, verheft het niet? Moge Godes gunst en 's volks toeschietelijkheid U de zware taak die Ge op Uw schouderen naamt lichter maken, en worde het mij geschonken, U zóó, als leeraar en als rector, te dienen, dat Uw vertrouwen niet beschaamd worde, noch ooit Uw keuze U berouw'. Met diezelfde bede kom ik tot U, Heeren Curatoren, Hooggeachte Broederen. Diep gevoel ik, wat er voor U in stak, als mannen van wetenschap de wetenschappelijke leiding eener School te aanvaarden, wier stichtingsbrief uit Dordrecht kwam. Maar dat Gij dit aandorst, en dien smaad U gevallen liet, is dan ook meer dan een doctorsbul, is een adelbrief van moed en van zedelijke toewijding, waarvoor ik U dank, deze School U eert, en ons volk U liefheeft. Het vinden van voor U bruikbare mannen, zij door hooger genade U vrucht van het gebed! Vrucht van het gebed, zij dat ook ál onze wetenschap, Hooggeachte Ambtgenooten, veelgeliefde Broederen, met wie het mij dan vergund zal zijn, den eersten steen voor dezen bouw te leggen. Meest op ónzen arbeid zal het aankomen; want om de vrucht van dien arbeid werd deze akker geploegd. O, schrikt Ge niet soms met mij terug, bij het indenken van de ontzaglijk moeilijke taak die we aanvaard hebben? En toch ge wilt niet terug, niet waar? Want ook Gij kent den drang, de aandrift van een hooger moeten. Bovendien, in één ding mogen we roemen immers: gevaar voor rangstrijd, die pest der faculteiten, is onder ons voorgoed afgesneden, doordien aller subjectief bedoelen zich gevangen gaf in de majesteit van het objectieve, het historische, het met macht bekleede, het officieel gesproken woord. U, Hooggeachte Heeren en Broeders, die uit het Buitenland herwaarts kwaamt, breng ik in naam van heel onze Stichting voor zoo verrassende broedertrouw dank. Uit Schotland, uit Duitschland, tot zelfs uit Amerika teekenen van sympathie te ontvangen, ziet, ook dat deed ons aan Dordrecht denken, waar eens alle Gereformeerde natie tegenwoordig was! Zoomin als de wetenschap, kent het Gereformeerd belijden nationale grenzen. Zij U het welkom dan in ons midden toegeroepen en neemt huiswaarts voor Uw broederen mede den gelukwensch, den vredegroet, de heilbeê van deez' kring! Weleerwaarde Zeergeleerde Heeren, Bedienaren des Woords, Hooggeachte Broederen, ook U hier in zoo breede rijen te mogen zien neêrzitten, verhoogt in niet geringe mate de vreugde van den feestdag. Ge weet we zijn van geen kerk noch voor een kerk. Het wetenschappelijk leven vormt ons een kring met eigen Souvereiniteit en dies zelfstandig leven. Niet aan ons, maar aan den Koning der kerk staat de beslissing, wat er uit Zijn gezuiverde en weêr te zuiveren kerken in deze landen worden zal. In het gebod ziende, zijn we in de uitkomst blind. Maar ook zoo eeren we toch hoog Uw stand, verkwikt ons Uw cordaat belijden, stellen we zeer hoogen prijs op Uwe publieke genegenheid. Want immers Ge zijt óók theologen, óók leidslieden der schare, óók priesters die voor het volk bidt. Dient ook ons dan als godgeleerden met Uw steun; als volksleiders met Uw aanbeveling, als priesterlijke voorbidders met het gebed ook voor deze Stichting in het huis onzes Gods. En zie ik dan ten slotte op U, die als Stichters, als Leden, als Begunstigers, als Districtshoofden of Stedelijke Wijkheeren voor onze Stichting Uw goud, Uw tijd, Uw inspanning woudt ten offer brengen, geliefde Broeders in onzen Heere Jezus Christus, naar menschelijke wijs gesproken ligt in Uw hand ons bestaan; de teerkost dien we op den weg zullen vinden; meer nog de mogelijkheid van onzen groei. Want dit weet Gij, op verre na zijn we er nog niet. Het getal hoogleeraren moet nog minstens verdriedubbeld. Verdriedubbelen nog moet zich dus óók de spankracht van Uw liefde en toewijding, — of... wat deze school naar haar bestek moet worden, wordt ze nooit. En toch, dat ze volbouwd zal worden, ja, dat durven we hopen, hoe stout U ook die hope schijn'. Om wat we reeds aanschouwden. Om de kostelijke trouw, waarmeê reeds zoo menig broeder ons verraste. Niet het minst om het enthousiasme voor deze heilige zaak, dat ik soms zag schitteren in het vrouwenoog. En dan... om nóg iets! Ook omdat Ge als medestichter in Uw midden hebt den man, voor wien mijn laatste woord zij, Groens boezemvriend, — U bedoel ik edele Elout, eerbiedwaardig grijsaard, met Uw doordringend, altijd vriendelijk oog. Wat stuk historie is niet de spanne Uwer levensjaren! Wat reeks van Vorsten hebt Gij niet gediend! Wat stormen zijn er over Uw, nu moede, hoofd niet heengegaan! En dat Ge dan hier nog bij wildet zijn; Uw gave ons nog aanbracht, en een woord van vaderlijken zegen voor ons jongeren spraakt, hoe zoudt Ge er het hart van dit volk meê gestolen hebben, indien het niet reeds, eer aan deze Stichting ooit gedacht wierd, God voor Uw bezit had gedankt. Maar laat mij dit U althans openlijk mogen zeggen, hoe ons Gereformeerde volk dit broederlijk afdalen van de grooten der aarde tot den eenvoudigen burger waardeert; U zeggen hoe ons historisch volk zich verkleefd voelt aan die historische personen, die, gelijk Gij, twee reeds ten grave gedaalde geslachten voor ons oproepen; U zeggen bovenal hoe ons volk, dat bij den Bijbel groot wierd en bij dien Bijbel sterven wil, in die ootmoedige belijdenistrouw aan het Heilig Schriftwoord bij een man van Uw positie, van Uw levenswijsheid, van Uw jaren, met lof voor zijn Verbondsgod geniet. En was aller dingen aanvang U steeds in het gebed en aller dingen uitgang in dankzegging, dan draagt ook Uw ziel mijn bede immers, als de stille uitgang van mijn woord ook nu in lofverheffing voor den Almachtige gaat. Om U te danken, o, Onze Vader die in de hemelen zijt, Sprinkader van alle waarheid, Fontein aller waarachtige kennisse en aller wijsheid Bron! Van U afzwervend vindt Uw schepsel niet dan donkerheid, niet dan matheid, niet dan gebondenheid der ziele. Maar nabij U; ons badend in Uw leven; dan omstroomt ons het licht; doortintelt kracht ons de aderen; en ontplooit zich in zalige verrukking de vrijheid des geloofs. Aanbiddelijke, eeuwige Majesteit, zie dan in gunste ook op deze Stichting neder. Zij uit U haar goud, haar kracht, ál haar wijsheid. Zwere ze nooit bij een minder, nooit bij een ander, dan Uw heilig Woord. En Gij die ons de nieren proeft, o Rechter ook van onze natie en Oordeelaar ook van de scholen der wetenschap, breek zelf de muren dezer Stichting af, en delg ze uit van voor Uw aangezicht, indien ze ooit iets anders bedoelen, ooit iets anders willen zou, dan te roemen in die souvereine, die vrijmachtige genade, die er is in het kruis van den Zoon Uwer teederste liefde! Heere, Heere God! laat in Uw Naam alléén, in Uw Naam ál onze hulpe staan! Amen. En hiermede verklaar ik deze plechtigheid voor geëindigd en de Vrije Universiteit geopend te zijn! Ik heb gezegd.
